Hillary Clinton and the Power of Pardon

Hillary Slams Scooter Libby Commutation of Jail Time

Ranger
Senator Hillary Clinton of New York issued the following statement on President Bush's decision to commute the sentence of Scooter Libby:

"Today's decision is yet another example that this Administration simply considers itself above the law. This case arose from the Administration's politicization of national security intelligence and its efforts to punish those who spoke out against its policies. Four years into the Iraq war, Americans are still living with the consequences of this White House's efforts to quell dissent. This commutation sends the clear signal that in this Administration, cronyism and ideology trump competence and justice."

Pardon and Commutation are powers reserved to the President through our heritage of English common law. As a candidate for the Presidency, Hillary is seeking the power of pardon for herself. What is her record with regard to presidential pardons and cronyism?

The King had the power of life and death. The power to make law, and to commute or pardon crimes. So the framers of the Constitution gave such powers to our chief executive. While George Bush may enjoy the headlines today for the commutation (not pardon) of a portion of the sentence of Scooter Libby that he judged to be excessive, take a few minutes to refresh your memory of the felons and murderers that Bill Clinton pardoned.

Many of these miscreants were convicted of crimes that directly benefited Bill and Hillary Clinton. Take for example, Susan McDougal. She spent two years in jail for refusing to testify about the Whitewater Scandal to a special prosecutor. Her husband, Jim McDougal, died in prison, serving time for Whitewater bank fraud. Jim was shouting for the heart medication that could save his life when he died. The jail guards could not seem to hear his cries. Henry Cisneros, the Clinton Housing Secretary, was given a blanket pardon such that no specific mention is made of the specific crime. Was he pardoned for perjury? Tax evasion? Bribery? We will never know. Such a "get out of jail free" card is not given out in a Monopoly Board Game.

Others have a personal "good old boy" connection: Arthur David Borel and Douglas Borel, from Little Rock, Arkansas were guilty of odometer rollback The Borels are car dealers that the Clintons knew in Little Rock. They earned a little extra money by cheating consumers. It helps to have friends in high places.

Denise Rich is the socialite, beautiful wife that arranged for her husband, Marc Rich to contribute $400,000.00 on February 9th 2001, to the Clinton Presidential Library. Marc Rich made hundreds of millions of dollars during the oil crisis by selling Iranian Oil, when such trade was outlawed over the Embassy Hostage taking in 1980.

The list of drug dealers, fraud artists, counterfeiters, and smugglers is punctuated by Samuel Morrison, who sold defense secrets. The final days of the Clinton presidency are rife with tales of influence peddling. Hillary's brother got caught conducting such business, but was never charged.

*That would be "pull OFF a coup". Footnote: the DEM Congress passed the MCA, Bush only signed it into law.

  • Bryan Belrad12/29/2007

How can a sitting Prez pull of a coup? That's an easy one! Suspend key elements of the Constitution by claiming 'national security' interests, and imprison all the 'traitors' who dissent. See http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/458883/the_military_commissions_act_of_2007.html

  • Anne Bryant11/9/2007

Oh... and Ranger, thank you for pointing out the hypocrisy of the Clintons. It seems that some people forget (or would like you to forget).

  • Anne Bryant11/9/2007

Jamie, you are absolutely right, a voice of reason.

  • Jamie K. Wilson8/9/2007

Jeff is sometimes a lunatic -- and a case in point, as he proves your argument. There's a psychological theory I read about recently that explains this -- now I'll have to look it up again. Basically, the theory goes that if you have bonded somehow with someone, it's actually harder to see fault with them than if you were an outsider or someone who was repelled by them. They used to use this to apply within families and personal relationships, but now some sociologists are recognizing the same issue within political parties, religious systems, etc. We have to remember, thought, that it applies to all of us, not just those who don't agree with us. (Love that one quote: "it doesn't matter what came before" -- huh? Bet he wouldn't say that if we started talking about Reagan's pardons.)

  • Bob P.7/4/2007

Ranger: excellent article and excellent retort to Jeff. I wouldn't have written a similar article last night had I seen yours first. It's amazing how the Dumbocrats continually turn a blind eye towards the criminal activities in their own Party and then have the gall to accuse the other Party of the same. I'm sick of all pols, Repub and Dems, Left and Right. It's obvious the truth is the casualty in American politics.

  • Ranger7/4/2007

Apples and Oranges? Left and Right? There is no comparison between the Clinton's use of pardon and that of George Bush. Clinton awarded over 700, each one bought and paid for through some sort of contribution, material, sexual, or political. Mr. Bush has granted less than one hundred. Mr. Bush does not have his brother in Law on golf courses arranging the deals. It is impossible to pull off a coup, when you are already the President. I suggest pyschological counseling for your terminal case of Bush Derangement syndrome. What is the threat that Scooter Libby poses? That he might take your parking spot at the country club?

  • Jeff Musall7/3/2007

The right just can't stop harping about the Clintons...the point they seem to miss is that they are talking apples and oranges...it doesn't matter what came before, this current president was and is trying to pull off a coup, in all practical terms. One party dictatorial rule. All Americans need to wake up to the threat posed.
