Downtown Los Angeles is a developing changing area that is like Manhattan and parts of New York City. You have a lot to see and do in a small, walkable area. The Hilton Checkers Hotel is a small, boutique property right in the midst of all the action. You are close to Staples Center and the Los Angeles Convention Center for business and also all of the great restaurants and bars in the Downtown area.
The Hilton Checkers features luxurious, upscale rooms with 42" flat screen TVs and all the amenities. The smaller scale and size means you get more personal attention than at a large property. The hotel caters to celebrity and high profile clients and offers some large, penthouse suites fit for a superstar.
The hotel is right in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, but in an area that is very walkable and also offers even night-time fun. A lot of Downtown Los Angles is exciting during the day and dangerous during the night. The Hilton Checkers provides a good range of bars and restaurants within walking distance, and safe to walk back from late at night.
Be sure to visit my favorite restaurant, Bottega Louie, a few blocks away at 700 South Grand Avenue, at 7th.
The hotel is directly across the street from the historic Biltmore Hotel and right next door to the Los Angeles Public Library's huge main branch. The hotel is better for adults and business travelers. The location is also not great for families who want to go to Hollywood, Universal Studios, Disneyland and places like that. You are better off staying right at Universal or Disney, or find a hotel in Hollywood, closer to major tourist areas.
The building has an interesting history, built in the 1920's as a women-only apartment building for discerning single ladies. As the editor of travel websites travel4people.com and travel4seniors.com, I am always seeking out unique properties in major cities as alterntative to the big, well known hotels. The Hilton Checkers is such a place.
