Juniper bonsai trees need to have times that are similar to hibernation in mammals. They need to be prepared for this though ahead of time. This can be done by making sure that the tree is exposed to some moderately cold weather of approximately 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Doing this will promote the hibernation, or resting state that they need to recharge for the spring and summer to follow.
Also they need to be watered properly like most other plants do. They are a type of tree that does need to have a period of time that they are dry, but you do not want this time to be too long in length before watering them as this will cause them undue stress and eventually kill them. Soaking them in a tray of water is one suggestion to do this, or using the bathtub is another way that this can be done easily. Make sure that you let them drain thoroughly after the watering so that the soil and roots are not prone to rotting.
Making sure that the environment that your bonsai is in will also enhance their growth. Using stones in the bottom of the pot that your tree is in will help create the humidity that they need to thrive. Moss is another option that will help them to keep in moisture that they need and also will give it a beautiful look as well.
Juniper bonsai trees also need an adequate amount of sunlight. The lower amounts that are put off by the sun in the early mornings or late afternoons is often all that they need. If your plant is inside then it should be located near a window so as they can get the sunlight that they need. Some people use fluorescent lighting as an alternative to this idea especially if there is no sunlight available in the location that they have chosen for the plant. They will require a lot more light though if you decide on using the artificial lighting method.
Last thing that a person that is growing a juniper bonsai needs to do is to make sure that they fertilize it. Every couple of weeks is when this should be done to ensure that they are getting all of the nutrients that they need for growth. Many people also suggest that the plant should be repotted every couple of years as well. Make sure that if you are doing this that you prune the roots to help control the size of the plant.
