Hire a Baby Boomer to Get the Job Done

Older Workers Can Be Better Workers!

Donna Hentsch
The baby boomer generation is near their retirement age. However, with people living longer, and rising costs of living and healthcare, many baby boomers are looking for jobs to help pay for their expenses later in their retired lives when they will be unable to work.

The baby boomer generation is one of high morals and a strong dedication to doing good work. This great work ethic makes them a wonderful market of potential employees for both small and large businesses. As an added bonus to most businesses today the baby boomers are generally only looking to work part-time and many have access to health care plans and do not need to obtain them through an employer. The baby boomers can be a great part-time, no benefits, pool of employees who will not be looking for more hours and benefits.

Baby boomers often have years, or even decades, of experience in the workplace. This makes them ideal employees because they have vast amounts of knowledge they can apply to their work. Many of the skills and knowledge they have obtained over the years makes them easier to train for their current positions and means they can draw on their years of experience to get the job done.

Baby boomers are also great mentors for younger, less experienced, employees. The baby boomers are able to teach the younger employees their knowledge and are able to mentor younger employees in the ways of the working world. They can help younger workers navigate office politics and teach them how to work with people of all backgrounds.

Baby boomers are less likely to engage in office politics or office games. They come to work prepared to get the job done, and their work ethic helps them to keep their nose to the grindstone and get the work done that they are being paid to do. The baby boomer generation does not possess the entitlement mentality that many of the younger generations do.

While it may surprise you, older workers actually take-off less time from work than their younger counterparts. Younger people tend to have families and children causing them to need to take off more personal time. Baby boomers on the other hand, have grown children and only need time off when they themselves need it. While you would think older people would be ill more, generally they are susceptible to things like colds much less than younger people. Baby boomers are also much less likely to call in sick when they are not truly ill, unlike younger workers who will call in sick and take "mental health" days much more often, as a rule.

Baby boomers tend to be more loyal to their employers and provide much better customer service, especially in positions where they are likely to provide services to others their own age. Their work ethic dictates that they have loyalty to a job where the company has loyalty and treats them well in return. Having this stability can save a business a lot of money in training due to employee turn-over.

Hiring a baby boomer to do a job is a good idea no matter how you look at it. By hiring a baby boomer you will find an employee who is loyal, comes to work each day, has a great work ethic and does a good job for you.
