Adding a deck to your house can provide additional space to enjoy many activities such as dining outdoors or enjoying the sunshine. It can also increase your home's value. If you have decided to add a deck to your home, you will either need to construct it yourself or hire a contractor to do the job. Most people do not have the skills necessary to be able to build a deck on their own. Here are some helpful tips for you if you are considering hiring a deck contractor.

You will first want to compile a list of possible contractors. If you can get referrals from people you know like family or friends or neighbors who have had decks constructed for them by local deck contractors, that's an excellent place to start. You can also look in your phone book's yellow pages or do a search online for contractors specializing in deck construction.

Once you have a list of possible contractors, you want to speak with several so that you can compare their rates, experience and your personal comfort level and rapport with them. You can either speak with them in person or by telephone. Check to make sure the deck contractor is properly licensed and that they carry sufficient workers compensation and liability insurance. This way if anything happens while the contractor and their crew are on your property you will not be held legally liable and any damage will be covered by their insurance. When speaking with the deck contractor find out what type of decks the they have experience with to make sure it matches with what you are looking for.

You should ask the contractors for references from previous jobs. Contact the references and ask how the deck project went and if they were satisfied with the work. If it is possible to see any of the decks they have constructed, drive by to view them.

With each deck contractor that you speak to you will want to get a written estimate of how much it will cost for them to build your deck. You will want to get several estimates to compare the rates. However, be sure that you do not select your deck contractor based only on price. You will also want to consider their experience, types of projects they have done, their references and your level of comfort and rapport with each contractor.

After you do decide which contractor you want to hire to build your deck, get a written agreement. The agreement should include the project's start and end dates, payment schedule, a list of the different materials used and the cost for labor and materials.

If you do your homework upfront and thoroughly research several contractors, you stand a very good chance of finding an excellent deck contractor capable of building a great deck that you will be happy with and can enjoy in the years ahead.
