The first thing to consider when looking for that special event planner is track record. Every event planner worth their weight has a portfolio. Many times you can go by word of mouth; the really good planners will have a reputation for doing it right. However, keep in mind that most of the planners who have that sort of reputation may also have the prices to go along with that rep.
Besides word of mouth you can also seek even planners out in the local yellow pages. This may be more difficult in smaller communities so you can also ask at a local party favors shop or local photographers. These are people who are intimately involved themselves in large events so they may have some names for you to try out.
The second consideration is details. While you are waiting for the first meetings with your potential event planners make sure you take the time to sketch out your event. You don't need all of the details, that will be your event planners job but you do need to give the event planner some idea of what you had in mind for your event. Jot down ideas, colors, entertainment considerations, the things that you feel need to be personalized. For instance if you are giving a birthday party and the birthday girl hates the color red, you would want the event planner to know this detail, after all this little detail could make or break the event for the recipient.
Finally, once you have interviewed and hired your new event planner, told them what you would and would not like, let go. This is perhaps the most important tip. You are hiring an event planner so that you will not have to be bogged in the details. If you hire someone and then micromanage them, there really was no point to you hiring them, you could have done it yourself. So hire the right person, give them the details, relax and enjoy the party.
