His Shadow

Anony mouse

She stood by him
and deflected the scornful rays
coming from the sun's adjacent eye.
What an eye!
She protected him, you know.
Not the other way around.

She felt her warm cold hand on his face
sheltering him from the scorching, piercing eye
of the naked sky above.

His shadow,
his protector.
His shadow,
his humble resistor.
Not him,
but not quite not him,
the shadow he was afraid of for so many years,
his better, darker half
his scary faceless nether land,
his sad and lonely faithful chap,
his shadow--
her misery.
Their amicable arrangement,
a fake engagement,
their sad termination
her undying devotion
his sad commitment.
His shadow, persistent.
Wind and sun came and went
And his shadow stayed.

And now, in a sunless world,
in a dark-less world,
she cannot exist.
She cannot protect him.
With her fate to protect expired,
but her devotion for him transpired,
she found life among the many non-shadows
walking alone in life.
