Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards

As everyone probably already knows, college is very expensive these days. One of the biggest sources of funding to help pay for college can be found through private scholarship searches. I found one that ended up winning me $8,000, a new laptop, and a trip to Miami. I am writing now to share it so that others can benefit.

The Hispanic Heritage Foundation is a non-profit organization. Their Youth Awards program has a mission of increasing the number of Hispanics going to college. Obviously the program is only open to those that are of Hispanic decent. You do not have to be a full blood, first generation, or have financial need. I was neither of those and ended up being a national winner. There is an application process that entails writing several short essays, as well as the other basic information that you would find on other scholarship applications. The application process runs January to March and is open to high school seniors that have at least a 3.0 unweighted GPA. There are thousands of applicants every year so winning is an honor.

There are 12 different regions that you can apply for. You apply to the one that you are close to. Then there are five different categories including: sports, business, math and engineering, journalism, and education. There is also a teacher that is recognized. The ceremony is a big ordeal. Mine was held at the University of Chicago for the Chicago Region. There are three categories for the regional level which are bronze, silver, and gold. They come with $1000, $2000, and $3000 grants respectively along with a medallion.

The next level is the national level. Here one person is selected for each category, along with a leadership category. The people that are eligible to be selected are those that were gold medallion winners from the regional sites. There are 12 gold medallion winners per category across the nation, and one becomes a national winner.

The national winners get an additional $5,000, and a whole laptop setup and printer from HP. You also get to go to Miami and Washington, D.C. for awards events. It is an amazing experience. There are celebrities and top people from the company sponsors at these events.

If you are Hispanic and you only want to apply for one scholarship, apply for this one. It is a great opportunity. On another note please be aware that the foundation is having some financial difficulties at this time because of the economy. They recent cut most of their staff and down scaled their events and some of the things they were able to provide. However, they have received funding in order to continue the Youth Awards program. I still believe that it will be an excellent opportunity for any student.
