Historic Lake Eola is the Centerpiece of Downtown Orlando

The centerpiece of downtown Orlando, Florida is picturesque Lake Eola. Lake Eola is surrounded by skyscrapers and high-rise condominiums making Lake Eola Park feel like a true oasis in the middle of a major metropolis. The park itself covers 43 acres of Florida wildlife, 23 acres of which is Lake Eola. In the center of the lake is the park's signature fountain, looking like a massive liquid wedding cake.

Lake Eola was formed in 1888. Like most lakes in Florida, it was born when a sinkhole filled with water. The lake's first fountain was installed in 1912, then later replaced in 1957. The original sinkhole lies just north of the fountain and goes down to a depth of 80 feet. In the past, Lake Eola Park has accommodated a zoo, a horse racing track, tennis courts, and a pier with a dance floor.

Today, a mile long paved pathway encircles the lake making it easier for fitness enthusiasts to keep track of their mileage. Joggers, walkers and in-line skaters enjoy the view at all hours of the day. Each Sunday from 9 to 2, the Sunday Eola Market sells organic produce, arts and crafts, and tasty goodies on the banks of the lake. Lake Eola is home to traditional white swans and black Australian swans who paddle amidst the swan shaped pedal boats and Venetian style gondolas available for rent. On the west side of the lake is the Walt Disney Amphitheater, which saw a $1 million overhaul in 2007. It serves as a year round performance space and can accommodate over 900 theatre fans. On the east side of Lake Eola park is a new playground which was installed in 2007.

Lake Eola's signature event each year is the Fireworks Over the Fountain spectacle on the Fourth of July. Fair food vendors dot the fringe of the lake, bands and radio stations provide live music and there is face painting for the kids. People come from all over central Florida with picnic blankets and beach chairs to secure the best seat on the shore to enjoy the 20 minute fireworks display. In a visible display of their patriotism, political candidates come out to press the palms of voters. It's a fantastic occasion for people watching as well as enjoying a great American tradition.

Swan boat rentals are $12 per half hour and electric gondola boats are $15 per half hour.

I practically raised my children in Lake Eola (weekday picnics). I really miss and love this park. Thanks for the article :)
