Historic Williamsburg, Virginia: A Mini Travel Guide

Stephanie Mojica
WHERE

Tucked between coastal Virginia Beach and tobacco capital Richmond, Williamsburg is in the southeastern section of Virginia known as Hampton Roads.

WHY GO

For relaxation, a taste of Virginia history, and some of the finest seafood anywhere, Williamsburg is a suitable choice for families, singles, and couples of all ages.

WHEN TO GO

Spring and fall offer the best weather, hotel deals, and less crowds.

GETTING THERE AND AROUND

Getting There

Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport is 20 minutes from Williamsburg for those who aren't driving. Most of Williamsburg can be accessed from Interstate 64.

Getting Around

A car is highly recommended for ease of getting around. But it is possible to do without a car by using Williamsburg Area Transport and local cab companies.

BEST ATTRACTION

Jamestown Settlement, an action-packed and historically interesting museum that goes through the world of America's first colonists.

BEST UNUSUAL ATTRACTION

Colonial Williamsburg, a real-life restored version of what was the 18th-century capital of Virginia. There are few other places in the state, perhaps even the country, with the charm and historic feel of this living history museum. Actors portray historic figures such as Thomas Jefferson, and authentic food is also available.

BEST ALTERNATIVE

Busch Gardens and Water Country USA are an excellent way to get off the museum and touring track. Busch Gardens is especially nice in the fall, and has several roller coasters such as the Big Bad Wolf.

BEST LODGING

Hilton Garden Inn

Holiday Inn 1776

BEST EATS

Captain George's Seafood Restaurant offers a scrumptious all-you-can-eat buffet with seafood items such as crab legs, prime rib for meat lovers, and a lot of desserts.

Red, Hot & Blue's fare and atmosphere are more casual, with award-winning barbecue available for eat-in or takeout. There's also other Southern dishes.

The Trellis offers atmosphere, seafood, luscious desserts, and grilled regional fare.

BEST CULTURAL ENTERTAINMENT

Rosie Rumpe's Regal Dumpe is a rare mixture of bawdiness, culture, food, and a laughing good time.

BEST LOCAL HAUNT

Second Street Restaurant & Tavern is a place to kick back with the locals and eat and drink at non-touristy prices.

BEST SHOPPING

Prime Outlets at Williamsburg offers more than 90 brand names without sticker shock.

MONEY AND COMMUNICATIONS

U.S. dollars and credit cards accepted most anywhere. For phone and business center services, consult your hotel.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

There are few risks in visiting such a friendly Southern town. However, it might be advisable to avoid the solicitors, often trying to bait tourists into all-day long timeshare presentations, that hang around stores and restaurants. The worst time for this is the summer months. It's also a good idea to stick to more touristed areas for solo travelers who wish to walk around at night. Though rare in Williamsburg, crime can happen.
