John Dickinson Plantation
If you want to visit the plantation of one of the men who was responsible for the signing of the Constitution, then be sure to visit the John Dickinson Plantation. During your visit here you will find yourself immersed in the world he inhabited, through both videos and historic interpreters. You can also take a tour of the very beautiful property, accompanied by a guide dressed in period costume.
First State Heritage Park
The First State Heritage Park considers itself a "park without boundaries," and aims to connect a number of historic and cultural sites located in the city of Dover (which has been the location of state government since 1777). During a visit here you can explore any one of the numerous attractions located in the park. These include the Welcome Center and Galleries (which features exhibits on history and a display of Delaware's historic documents), the Biggs Museum of American Art (which features an extensive collection of 18th through 21st Century Delaware and American Art), and the Legislative Hall (which is available for free tours). If you are interested in conducting research on the history of Delaware, the First State Heritage Park is also the home of the Delaware Public Archives, which contains documents from the 17th Century until the present day. This is truly a park that is worth spending time in.
Delaware State House Museum
This beautiful building was originally the location of the state government of Delaware and of Kent County and, although it no longer serves that purpose, it is still a popular destination for both natives and visitors. Those who visit this fascinating attraction can tour the exquisite interiors of the building, which features some very unique architecture. The building is also accessible for those with disabilities, and tours are typically offered during regular business hours (although it is recommended that potential visitors call ahead to ensure that the museum will be open at the specified time). The museum is also host to a number of special events during the year.
Whether you plan on spending a day here for an entire weekend, be sure to add these fascinating and engaging museums to your itinerary. You'll be glad that you did.
