Located on the banks of the Ohio River, the city of Marietta is one of the oldest cities in Ohio, and as such is the ideal vacation spot for those looking for the best in historical attractions. With its rich and varied history (which goes back to the Revolutionary War,) those who are interested in history are sure to find something to amuse themselves.

Campus Martius Museum

The Campus Martius Museum houses a number of exhibits relating to the history of the settlement of the Northwest Territory (a territory that included Ohio before its statehood.) The museum has three floors of numerous historical exhibits, most of which fall into one of several categories. These categories include: "Ohio's First Peoples" (especially the Adena and Hopewell cultures,) "Marietta Pioneers," "Paradise Found and Lost" (focusing on various immigrant groups,) and a number of others. The Campus Martius Museum also hosts a number of special exhibits.

The Campus Martius Museum is open on Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission for adults is $7, with decreasing rates for children and seniors. Their contact information is below:

Children's Toy and Doll Museum

Located in a Queen Anne-Eastlake home, the Children's Toy and Doll Museum is the ideal attraction in Marietta for those seeking to understand the history of toys and dolls in American culture. The museum houses numerous exhibits, divided into several themed rooms, including: "Dollhouse Rooms," "Oak Case Room," and "Antique Doll Room." The museum also houses the Sally Hille Library, which contains a number of reference volumes.

The Children's Toy and Doll Museum is open seasonally from May through October on Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., although visits by appointment are available anytime. Admission is $4 for adults, with slightly smaller charges for children. Their contact information is below:

The Castle

Built in a Gothic Revival architectural style, the Castle is one of Marietta's most unique and enjoyable attractions. A number of guided tours are available, in which visitors get to glimpse the many decorative objects and other artifacts housed in this magnificent home. The Castle has gone through many different owners in its life, and as a result the artifacts on display vary considerably. Nevertheless, they are all worth viewing, and the Castle is a must-see attraction for those interested in local history.
