Macomb, Illinois, founded in 1830, is the home of Western Illinois University. About 20,000 people call Macomb their home. For anyone deciding to visit the area or are in town to see family or friends, there are plenty of activities for you to see and do-whether it be indoor or outdoor recreation.

If you are looking to get outdoors and spend some extracurricular time with nature, check out the Horn Field Campus located at the Western Illinois University's campus. There is ninety-two acres of vast nature waiting for you to explore, including nature trails, woodlands and prairie. While spending time outside in this peaceful atmosphere, you can feel relaxed and either spend time alone to gather your thoughts, or bring family and friends for reunions or picnics. Or if you are more into golf, go tee up at the Harry Mussatto Golf Course that has eighteen holes for your golf clubs to conquer. There are plenty of challenging courses that include bunkers and adventurous water hazards for you to work your way through.

For more breathtaking outdoor views, bring your camper or fishing gear to the Argyle Lake State Park that is located nearby in Colchester just seven miles away. It has often been called "the fisherman's delight." It offers ninety-three acres that are devoted to boating and fishing. For those who would rather "foot it," you can hike through part of the five miles of trails that are available. To stay overnight for a few days, drive your camper and take advantage of the full service campgrounds that are available.

For those seeking out the history of Macomb, or you would like a learning experience, go check out the Historic Barn Tour that is found north of Argyle Lake State Park. Macomb still has at least thirty barns that still stand within the city from the early twentieth century. Some barns have been restored or made over while others are still standing in their original historic state as mementos from the past. Those who wish to take their magical photographs in time are asked to take the pictures from the road or somewhat far from the barn because most of the barns do remain on others private property.

Once you have toured Macomb or spent a day close to nature, wind down at the Inselhaus, Inc. Bed and Breakfast. Its house is also an image from history, as it was built at the turn of the century in the year 1901. Six rooms are available along with a private bath. Some of the amenities that are offered include a television with DVD, hair dryers, telephone with free local calls, and Internet in each room. Dogs up to forty pounds are allowed for an extra ten dollars per night.

So if you are looking for a place that still holds a bit of history, or you need to spend some time next to nature to reflect, fish, or spend some quality time with family, check out the attractions in Macomb, Illinois. You can get close to both history and nature while sight-seeing or relaxing indoors at a homey bed and breakfast.
