Squire Boone's rock in the Madison County Courthouse is an interesting piece of history to view. In 1769, Daniel Boone and his brother Squire first explored Madison County, but Squire made his return to North Carolina. When Squire returned to Kentucky at one of their original campsites, he carved "1770 Squire Boone" on a rock to let Daniel know he had returned. The large rock is today encased in the foyer of the Madison County Courthouse and can be viewed by anyone during the courthouse hours. The courthouse is on Main Street in Richmond.
The Irvinton House Museum is open year round to anyone wanting to walk through history and into the life of Elizabeth Shelby Irvine and learn about her tragic story. During Halloween, the museum is opened in the evening for a free event where actors portray the historical figures that lived in the house and in Madison County. The event, called "A Stroll through the Past," is a family fun event. The museum is on Lancaster Avenue off Main Street.
