History on Aaron Rodgers' Side

Several Favre Backups Have Gone on to Be Decent Starters

With Brett Favre's retirement announcement Tuesday, all eyes will now turn to back up quarterback Aaron Rodgers; a player the Packers drafted in the first round in 2005 as Favre's eventual successor but has seen limited action and is largely a mystery.

Since he's had very little playing time, it's hard to analyze Rodger's chances of success based on that. However, if you look at other quarterbacks who have sat on the bench behind Favre, history weighs in on Rodgers' side.

Matt Hasselbeck - Hasselbeck was Favre's back up quarterback for two seasons before being traded to the Seattle Seahawks. After a somewhat shaky start in Seattle, he developed into a solid starter, making three Pro Bowls and taking his team to four straight divisional titles and one Super Bowl.

Mark Brunell - Brunell backed up Favre for two seasons before being traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars in 1995. He made three Pro Bowls and took the team to two conference title games. He also started a couple seasons for the Washington Redskins before injuries caught up to him.

Ty Detmer - In his first 11 starts for the Philadelphia Eagles, Detmer went 7-4 and took the team to the playoffs. He went on to start games for the Lions, Browns and 49ers.

Aaron Brooks - Brooks served as a backup for one season before being traded to the New Orleans Saints. Even though he was run out of New Orleans, he did lead the Saints to a playoff appearance in 2000 and came up just short of the playoffs in two other seasons. He also is the team's all-time leader in touchdown passes.

Doug Pederson - Pederson only spent parts of two seasons as a starter, with the Eagles and Browns; largely as a fill-in until their rookie quarterbacks (Donovan McNabb, Tim Couch) were ready to play. However, he backed up Favre for a combined 7 seasons and was solid when asked to play.
