Excellent Places to Study History

Although many people choose to study the discipline at history at some of the larger institutions in the state of Virginia (and several articles in this series have discussed those), it is also important to recognize that a number of small colleges and universities also offer unique and exciting opportunities to study the world of the past. This article, the third in a series, will profile some of those programs.

University of Mary Washington
The Bachelor of Arts degree in History at the University of Mary Washington is designed to imbue in students a number of skills, including the ability to communicate effectively in both writing and speech, and to be able to conduct independent research effectively. Thee program offers training in numerous historical periods and subjects, from ancient to modern and across numerous geographical areas. The department is home to a chapter of the national honorary, and it also offers a number of study abroad opportunities for students enrolled in the program.

College of William and Mary
The history major at the College of William and Mary has prepared students to enter some of the finest and most prestigious graduate programs in the country, due in large part to its intensive curriculum and study abroad opportunities. The major requires 33 hours of coursework, some of which is comprised of broad survey courses and others on more focused topics. The program is also home to a chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, and exceptionally talented students also have the opportunity and ability to pursue independent research for an honors thesis. This program is thus an ideal choice for those who wish to adequately prepare themselves for the study of history at the graduate level.

Roanoke College
History is definitely one of the most popular majors at Roanoke College, which is no surprise, considering the fact that the department is home to several distinguished professors and lecturers who bring their considerable expertise to the classroom. In addition, those seeking individual attention will be glad to know that the average class size in history classes is 18 students, ensuring that students receive ample attention from their instructors. Although students have the option of choosing any one of a number of concentrations, all students must take 11 courses in order to fulfill the requirements of the major.

If you are interested in the world of the past, then you should certainly consider any one of the small colleges and universities located in the state of Virginia. In the process, you might discover that you want to continue pursuing such study at the graduate level, which is itself an exciting opportunity.
