History of the Clothes Dryer

We take the clothes dryer for granted. For all of us, we have never lived without the convenience of a washer and dryer in our lives. Maybe some of us had a grandmother who liked to dry her clothes on a line, but that is about as primitive as most of us get.

We can't imagine what it was like in the past to have to wash and dry clothing by hand. It was a hard chore that involved hot, steamy water and a lot of elbow grease. We are lucky that we don't have to deal with a chore that can practically kill a person anymore. Having a washer and dryer, or access to them is a convenience we would never want to be without.

It was in the early part of the 1800s that clothes dryers were invented in France and England. The first type of clothes dryer was called the ventilator. The first one built was built by a man named Pochon who was French. It was a barrel shaped drum of metal that had holes in it. You turned it by hand over a nice, warm fire. The metal protected the clothes from being burned. Personally, with this type of contraption, I would have stuck to hanging the clothes out on a line.

In June of 1892, a patent was granted to Mr. George T. Sampson for a clothes dryer. His dryer used heat from a stove in order to dry the clothes and is considered an example of a machine that was like a ventilator.

It wasn't until around 1915 that electrical clothes dryers made their way onto the scene. Companies have been perfecting clothes dryers and adding features to make their clothes dryers the one you absolutely have to have in your home. The first washer and dryer combo unit was introduced in 1954 and the innovations haven't stopped there.

There are many sizes, types and models of clothes dryers that are available on the market today. They are an appliance that will cost a bit of money, so the purchase of one should be made very carefully. When you buy a clothes dryer, you want it to last for some time so it is best to do your research on the different manufacturers and models that you can purchase.
