One popular show that's on a lot is Modern Marvels. Now granted it is somewhat interesting the first time or two you see how toilet paper came to be. But when it leads to a sequel, Bathroom Tech II, I think the channel is losing the historical vision that gave it such a huge fan base.
Why Ice Road Truckers is on the History Channel, I have no idea. At least with shows like Modern Marvels or Gangland, they can show a history behind the making of something or how gangs came to be. But this is basically like reality TV for truckers driving on ice. I don't have a problem at all with the show. I just fail to realize why it's on a channel supposedly devoted to history.
The History channel is also heavily into modern events you can find and read in current newspapers. The war in Iraq is one such topic. I watch the news and read the papers. The History Channel use to be an entertaining and enlightening escape from current events. They almost never devote airtime to the other wars as they use to. For example, the Civil War, WWII, and ancient wars use to be a mainstay of the channel.
As I said I don't have a problem with any of these shows, they aren't bad shows. But the History Channel's current lineup is almost exclusively devoted to them. It's as if the history part is an afterthought. I'll keep going back to check from time to time to see if any history pops up, but for now the History Channel isn't on my must-see list.
And don't get me started on the National Geographic Channel. I now call it the dog show channel. The Dog Whisperer, Dogs with Jobs...The list goes on.

Post a Commenti agree the channel is almost not even worth watchig any more
I'm glad others are sharing my disgruntlement with the History Channel. It used to be my TV safety net. If I couldn't find anything I liked on the other channels, I could almost always enjoy what was on History Channel.
Now it seems to have a preoccupation with a lot of strange topics, endless shows about UFOs, Nostradums, and the secret messages the Freemasons embedded in the one dollar bill. Sheesh.
That being said, I do have to say I love the show The Universe, which is at least about history in the cosmic sense.
In many respects I agree with the article, some the shows the present are way off the point of history, yet they are still interesting others are a waste of time.
I would like to comment on the JFK show that was recently aired. I think the problem is that thje people themselves that were there don't get enough credibilaty. People know what they heard and what they saw. I couldn't believe that they were saying basically that people wanted to believe that only one man couldn't pull it off. I don't think thjat's the case at all. A large number of people that were there said they heard and saw shots fired else where. Mrs. Connely herself said she don't care what the Warren report say's, she knows there were more shots fired. My main problem with that show was you were basing it on oppinion, not fact. It has nothing to do with themovie although you did try to make the real Jim Garrison look like a creep. He must of cared or he wouldn't have pursued it all them years. Fact is fact listen to the people that were there.
i'm glad you wrote this, maybe the system thinks we are becoming to educated?
Cont.) "when it should have read that Judas 'would descend from the holy generation'. What more damage to the orignial could NatGeo do than to reverse everything negative, into a positve & vice versa. That my friends was intentional & pre-meditated. Shame on NatGeo for that.

You made a direct hit my friend! Great article. Nat. Geogrph. is no better: They butchered the real text when translating their best seller (that'$ what it'$ all about!)The Gospel of Judas (should've stayed lost). Gene Veith, Academic Dean of Patrick Henry College in Virginia, points out that National Geographic has "...translated the text so that it reads the opposite of what it actually said [1.]. His biggest problem with the reliability of the book of Judas, was "...that the manuscript was dishonestly translated. What the National Geographic translated as 'spirit' (with Judas being described as the '13th spirit') should be rendered as 'demon' (with Judas being the '13th demon')" [1.]. National Geographic's best sell also says "that Judas has be 'set apart for the holy generation'. But the real text says "set apart from the holy generation'. Perhaps "...the most flagrant mistranslation was leaving out a negative, saying that Judas 'would ascend to the holy generation', "when it sh
Amen. The leadership, which was responsible for the dumbing down of A&E, is behind the new wave of reality series being pawned off as history.
You're absolute right..History channel is one of my favorite too, but I found myself shy away from it too.
You are so right! I really like Ice Road Truckers, but I can't figure out WHY it's on the History Channel either! I agree that the channel has lost its focus. Management needs to regroup and get back on track.
