History of the iPod (Part 2): Mini, Nano, and Shuffle

Jeff Schuman
Apart from the main iPods there were three other models of iPods. The iPod mini, nano and shuffle. Each of these different iPods have two generations a piece.

iPod mini

1. The first generation iPod mini was released on January 6, 2004. It cost $249 and came in a 4 GB capacity size. This model cam in five colors, introduced the "Click Wheel" which was later used by the fourth generation iPod, and came with either a USB or FireWire for connection.

2. The second generation iPod mini was released on February 22, 2005 and was sold for either $199 or $249. This iPod came with 4 and 6 GB capacity and had longer battery life, and brighter color variants. The "Click Wheel" lettering matched the body bolo and there was no AC adapter. This iPod had either USB or FireWire capability for connection.

iPod nano

1. The first generation iPod nano was released on September 7, 2005. There were 3 capacity sizes, 1, 2, and 4 GB, and were sold for $149-$249. This iPod was a successor to the iPod min. It had a slimmer design with flash memory, lyric support, and a color screen. The connection for this iPod was USB and used a FireWire for charging only.

2. The second generation iPod nano was released on September 12, 2006. This iPod was sold for $149-$249. There were 2, 4, and 8 GB capacities. There were 6 anodized aluminum cases, all of different colors, a brighter screen, a music search function, and a longer battery life all added to this new model. The connection for this iPod was USB and used a FireWire for charging only.

iPod shuffle

1. The first generation iPod shuffle was released on January 11, 2005. It was sold for $99-$149, later $69-$99. The iPod shuffle was sold in either 512 MB or 1 GB memory capacity. This iPod was the first iPod made without a screen and "click wheel". It was also the first iPod to use flash memory not hard drive storage. This iPod used USB for connection only.

2. The second generation iPod shuffle was released on September 12, 2006. It was sold with only 1 GB capacity and cost $79. It was made of an aluminum case with smaller form factor, multi-colored models were later released, and it was made with a built-in clip. This iPod used USB with a dock only for connection.

Over the past five years the Apple iPod has dominated the market. With it's four models and all the different generations of them it is no wonder.
