History of Leprechauns in Irish Mythology

Bev Cohen
In Irish mythology, leprechauns are little fairies! These creatures are said to have existed in Ireland before the coming of the Celts. They are all men, no women. How they reproduce is just part of the mystery surrounding these little men. And they are grumpy! Maybe that's because they spend most of their time making shoes. Standing only about 2 feet tall, they live in forests and grassy hills.

Leprechauns make and drink their own special brew of alcohol. When humans happen upon Leprechauns, the little guys are often drunk from this brew! But they are never too drunk to make shoes!

And Leprechauns love to play traditional Irish musical instruments like tin whistles and Irish harps. They are said to have wild musical sessions sometimes all night long where they dance and sing and drink!

The most famous aspect of Leprechaun mythology is their hidden treasure. Every leprechaun is said to possess a pot of gold. And the myth goes that if a human can catch a leprechaun, he must reveal to you where his pot of gold is. So of course humans have been going crazy trying to get rich by catching leprechauns through the years. But these tricky little creatures are extraordinary escape artists and reportedly, if you take your eyes off of them for a moment, they will vanish and leave you crying.

Many Leprechauns have supposedly hidden their gold at the end of rainbows. This may be true but is hard to prove since no human has ever been able to get to the end of a rainbow before it disappears.

So as you can see, if you are looking to get rich, it would be worth taking a trip to Ireland. With all the leprechauns running around, no one has been able to catch any of them. Therefore, all the gold is still hidden and probably amounts to quite a bit!
