History of National Car Rental

T. M. Robertson
In 1947, a group of 24 independent car rental operations decided to merge together and form National Car Rental. National began with approximately 800 vehicles and 60 locations. During the following years, National continued to grow and became one of the top car rental companies. They did this by pioneering many unique features intended to improve the overall rental experience for their customers.

Today, National Car Rental has become a global leader in the car rental industry and continues to offer premium services to the frequent business traveler through their numerous airport locations. National has many locations throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Latin American, Asia, and the Pacific Rim. In addition, National forged an alliance with Europcar to cater to their European customers and with this alliance they became part of the world's largest car rental network.

Some additional company highlights include:

During the 1950's, National became the first car rental company to offer one-way travel options for their customers allowing them to pick up a vehicle in one city and drop in off in another.

During the 1960's, National became the first car rental company to incorporate the use of computers into their daily reservation process by using Telemax.

During the 1970's, National became the first car rental company to cater to leisure travelers by offering flat rates to its customers.

During the 1980's, National became the first car rental company to introduce the industry to the concept of a frequent renter program called the Emerald Club.

During the 1990's, National hit a milestone when it was announced as the official sponsor of the PGA Tour. Later, in 1997, National merged with Alamo. The company decided the best strategy would be to keep the two brands separate with National catering more toward business travelers and Alamo catering more toward leisure travelers.

In more recent times, National and Alamo were both acquired by the Taylor family who created a parent company called Enterprise Holdings that bundled National, Alamo, and Enterprise under the same entity.
