Hitch with Will Smith - a Movie Review

Kathryn E. Darden
In the 2005 romantic-comedy movie Hitch, Will Smith stars as Alex Hitchens, a professional matchmaker (or consultant as Hitch calls himself), who teaches ordinary men how to successfully pursue beautiful women. Hitch, once a lonely and subsequently heartbroken wallflower himself, has learned how to manipulate women. The movie Hitch is cute, sweet, and funny, but that is the basic plot of the first half of the movie - Hitch can teach any man to be a player.

Hitch meets his biggest challenge when he takes on his latest project, Albert Brennaman (Kevin James), a clumsy, accident-prone junior accountant. Brennaman has fallen hard for one of his clients, Allegra Cole (Amber Valleta), a beautiful and wealthy celebrity, who is completely out of his league. When Hitch takes his case, informs Brennaman that Hitch is Michaelangelo and Brennaman is the Sistine Chapel.

However, Hitch's confidence in his ability to play his mind games with women is shaken when he meets and falls for sexy gossip columnist, Sara Melas (Eva Mendes). She is an intelligent, somewhat cynical woman who can see through some of his clever banter and recognizes Hitch as a player. And in the way only Hollywood can weave a plot with multiple coincidences, Melas is researching Brennaman's love interest, Allegra Cole. To further complicate the plot of Hitch, Melas' best friend has a one night stand with a man Hitch not only refused to help, but punched out for being a colossal jerk.

One of my favorite scenes in Hitch is the tour of Ellis Island. The scene, although contrived (because that's how Hitch operates), still reminded me of my own wonderful trip to Ellis Island. Brennam's dancing scene is also chuckle-worthy. Will Smith and Kevin James are great together in Hitch and should definitely consider another film together. I am a huge Will Smith fan and just reviewed him in I Am Legend. However, in spite of the fact that Hitch learns his lesson by the end of the movie (and the end of the Hitch is pretty cute, by the way), Hitch is a fairly shallow flick about dating and relationships.

Hitch stars Will Smith (I Am Legend), Eva Mendes (The Women), Kevin James ("King of Queens"), Amber Valletta (What Lies Beneath), Adam Arkin (Life), and Michael Rapaport ("Sex and the City"). The Director for Hitch is Andy Tennant (Sweet Home Alabama) for Columbia Pictures.

Hitch was released into theaters on February 11, 2005. The runtime for Hitch is 2 hours.
