I remember it like it was yesterday. I hadn't planned on doing it. I can't remember if we won or lost or even who it was against. I just remember the moment.
We were playing on a small softball diamond. The fences were closer to the plate, than a regular little league field. We used it, because the regular field was too wet. Too little boys, that doesn't matter. what mattered was that we were getting to play.
I wasn't a very good player either. I was small and played right field. Right field was always for the weaker players.
When I first went to bat, I thought about only getting on base. A walk was just as good as a single. However, my first concern was self preservation. The pitcher had very poor control. The first pitch actually went behind me and to the backstop.
The pitcher wanted to make sure he didn't do that again. He laid the next one dead center over the plate. Using a bat that was way too heavy for me, I took a normal swing and ball took off towards right center. It kept going and I started running.
Right before reaching first base, I looked for sight of the ball. I couldn't see it. I did notice something things that I will never forget. The first baseman dropped his head. The center-fielder had his back turned to me. The second base umpire was making a circle over his head with his right index finger. I knew it was gone.
I was in my moment of glory. I quickly thought, "how should I run the rest of the way?" I decided to do a normal trot and not show anyone up.
The next batter was walking to the plate and gave me a high five. I headed for the dugout and was slapped on the back as I went to sit down. The best moment of my life to that point was over.
I went on to hit many more home runs in baseball, softball and even wiffle ball. However, you never forget your first. "Do you remember yours?"

My first home run was at age 8 while I was playing mini-minor softball. Man, that was a great feeling!
