Hitting a Successful Lob Serve in Racquetball

Nick Mayer
One of the most important things to know in racquetball are all of the different serves. In this article, we will be examining how to hit a successful lob serve. First off, you must know that this serve does not take much force at all, thus why it is called a "lob" serve. After knowing this, let us go into more detail into how to successfully hit a lob serve.

Step 1 - Stand off center of the middle of the court while in the server's box. After this, gently drop the ball while your legs are bent at a decent angle. This is important for getting a good shot and to make sure that your serve does not end up being a dud.

Step 2 - After dropping the ball, let it hit the ground and just after it hits the ground sweep just above the ground with the racket. Aim the shot upwards, but make sure not to hit the ceiling with your shot as this is an instant fault and you lose your serve. Be creative with your shot. Try hitting off different walls and see how it works out. Just remember to not hit the ceiling or back wall, as that is a fault.

Step 3 - Where you put your shot is completely up to you. You can aim it in either corner or even in the middle of the wall so it returns in the corner of the wall for your opponent. It truly is up to you. I usually prefer to hit it in the middle in order to jam my opponent by hitting it toward his backhand in the corner of the wall. This usually easily jams him about a third of the time. The other 2 times he usually gets an okay shot off, but it is very easy to place a solid shot after he returns his.

After learning how to hit a successful lob serve it is time for you to try it out. It is impossible to learn how to play racquetball in any way until you practice. Practice is essential to getting better at any sport, so go out and try out this new serve you just learned called the lob serve. There are two other serves that are used primarily in racquetball and they are the Z serve and the Drive shot. Both of these are very successful but the best serve, in my opinion, is the lob serve. Good luck with your newly acquired skill!
