Hitting a Successful Z Serve in Racquetball

Nick Mayer
The Z serve in racquetball is one of the best shots in the game. It is one of the most difficult shots to defend and get a legitimately good shot off. Even professionals use this shot in their matches. The Z shot is so difficult to follow because it hits off of four different walls before it becomes easy enough to return. From personal experience, I can say that my game improved greatly once I mastered this shot and after you master it, you too can improve your racquetball game.

Step 1 - In order to have a good Z serve, you must first know where to stand. Stand off center of the middle of the court, just a few feet right or left of the center of the court. Be sure to have a low center of balance and keep your knees bent.

Step 2 - Take a step with your back foot, and then follow it up by taking another step with your front foot. This allows you to amass the maximum amount of power for your swing.

Step 3 - Drop the ball as you are taking your steps. Then here is where you are to take your swing. Aim the shot a couple feet from the crosscourt corner wall and approximately six to seven feet off of the ground. This way, it will bounce off of the front wall and then hitting the side wall. After it bounces off of these two walls, it will then bounce off of the ground while crossing the court. As the ball bounces upwards off the ground, it will then hit the other side wall and quickly bouncing off of the back wall afterwards.

After this procession has taken place, your opponent then has a decent opportunity to return your serve. Because this serve takes a while to take place, you have enough time to set up for returning the ball after your opponent hits it. This is one of the most effective shots in the game because it hits the front wall, both side walls, and then the back wall. Since this shot is so complex in theory, it makes all of your other, simpler, serves much more effective. This is because your opponent will be looking for more of a difficult shot to return, but when they see a simple serve they will be baffled and you will have a much better chance of winning.
