Hobo Halloween Costume for Kids

Karen Bishop
Are you on a tight budget? Wondering how you can afford a halloween costume for the kids this year? You've come to the right place for the answer. I have a halloween costume that may not cost you a dime. You have everything you need in the dresser drawer in your kid's room. I dressed my kids in a hobo halloween costume when they were little. Kids love to mix and match clothes which is perfect for halloween.

A hobo halloween costume you can put together in a matter of minutes.

Step 1: Supplies

- That pile of socks you've been hoarding since you found out the dryer ate the ones that matched them.

- Shirts your kid has outgrown that he/she only wears for play, or fingerpainting sessions.

- Those ratty jeans you've been meaning to throw away. Torn pockets and holes make a perfect hobo halloween costume.

- A bandana, preferably one that is faded.

- A small branch

- Dirt or black halloween face paint. You can find that at the dollar store or WalMart for a couple of dollars.

- Optional: Patches, markers, grass, hay, moss

Step 2: Putting the Hobo Halloween Costume Together

If you live in an area of the country that is chilly outside on halloween, you can layer clothes to keep your kid warm. Put on a long sleeve shirt with a short sleeve shirt over it. Shirts that are a little short work great for a hobo. Remember, clothes that are too short or too small fit the hobo image.

Have your kid put those ratty jeans on. Sew patches over a hole in the knee, and/or a hole in the butt of the jeans. For a pair of jeans with small holes, no holes, or are just too short, grab the kids' markers. Draw your own patches on the jeans in any size, shape, and color you like. You can let your kids do their own patches if they're old enough.

Lay the bandana on a table. Pile a handful of grass, hay, moss, or a few of the mismatched socks in the middle of the bandana. Grasp a corner of the bandana in one hand, and grasp the opposite corner in the other hand. Bring them together and tie in a knot. Take the branch you found and tie the other two corners around the stick. Now you have an authentic hobo carryall for your kids' hobo halloween costume.

To finish the hobo look for this halloween costume, smear a bit of dirt on his/her cheeks, forehead, tip of the nose, and on the back of the hands. Boys may like this part of the halloween costume because they're getting dirty on purpose. If you have a girl, or boy that doesn't like dirt, lightly smear some black face paint on your kids face and hands.

Your kids look like real hobos who used to wander the country by train hopping.
