Hockeytown Cafe in Detroit: Needs to Spend Some Time in the Penalty Box

Joe Jewett
A buddy and I went to Detroit to catch some Tigers games recently. Before a night game, we went over to grab some dinner at Hockeytown..a place that had been recommended to us by someone that we had met at a previous game.

The woman who took our name for a table was pretty short with us and told us that it would be about twenty minutes. In reality, our wait was only about fifteen minutes. (I mention that because its the most positive thing that I can say about our experience.)

After being seated, a man came up and introduced himself as our server and said that he would be right back. Fifteen minutes later he returned. He asked for our order but didn't write it down. (I hate that. When a server doesn't write down my order, I spend the next twenty minutes wondering what part of my meal is going to be wrong. I think I'm supposed to be impressed if a guy remembers "hamburger, no onion" for the thirty seconds that it takes him to walk from my table to the kitchen...but I never am.)

Anyway, he didn't write down our order, so of course our drinks were wrong and we never got the bread that the menu said was to come with our meals. After serving us the food, this guy never checked in with us to find out if everything was okay, instead returing only to deliver the check...which I saw him holding in his mouth as he came back into the dining area from the kitchen. We had asked for separate checks, but of course this wasn't done. My friend and I asked the waiter to please just go ahead and divide the total in half and put half on my credit card and half on my friend's card. Instead, the server charged my card for my friend's meal, and my meal to my friend's card...thus bringing to a close our disastrous dining experience.

In Hockeytown's favor, I would have to admit that they are indeed close to Comerica Park. But there are plenty of other places close to the ballpark, and we will be checking out one of those next time.

Alas another poor soul that does not know how to dine out. If and when a situation like this occures SPEAK UP!!! Ask to talk to a Manager do something besides writing a boo-hoo letter that will not get you anywhere except laughed at. There has been many of times that people have the same problems such as yours. You should have called a penalty instead of getting boarded by a waiter. My advice to you would be if you are not going to stand up for yourself go back to the minors and learn to stick up for yourself.
