Hofstra University Hosts Third Presidential Debate

Excitement Mounts at Hofstra, Especially for the Students

Hofstra University, in New York, is hosting the third Presidential Debate between Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama this Wednesday. This major national event brings a spotlight to Hofstra, as well as some challenges.

First, the excitement:

Hofstra University is located in Hempstead, Long Island, about 25 miles from New York City, and according to their website, has about 12,500 students. Many of them are volunteering for the debate in different capacities.

According to listings here and here, Hofstra University students will be covering the debate for their college radio station and working as security (in addition, of course, to the Secret Service and local police). Some students have been involved in political education efforts throughout the campaign.

Other Hofstra University students will get to see the debate in person. This Hofstra University statement says more than 6800 students applied for tickets. Only a limited number were given out and, "No debate tickets are available for the public, administrators, faculty, alumni or parents through Hofstra University." Which is disappointing to many.

While there's pride that a Presidential Debate is being held on Long Island, traffic will be a big challenge.

Hofstra University is split into two parts by Hempstead Turnpike, one of the major East-West roads that goes through the middle of Nassau County. (I've driven on it many times and it's usually very busy.)

The debate is being held in the David Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex, which is on the north side of campus. According to an announcement by Hofstra University found here, "Hofstra facility and road closings primarily affect the northeast portion of campus and the athletic facilities." But there will be restrictions on the day of the debate on Hempstead Turnpike and Earle Ovington Boulevard (which isn't as major, but is used by a lot of people who work in the area).

In addition, debate parking and a shuttle bus system outlined here will affect traffic on other streets around Hofstra University. As one of the hotels closest to the debate, you can expect the Marriott right by the Nassau Coliseum to be very busy. They've got a shuttle bus set up there as well.

While the debate at Hofstra University brings excitement to Long Island, most people won't get any closer to the debate than their TV sets. Still, many may head to the area to try to get a glimpse of the candidates in this historic election.
