Holiday Craft Fair Booth/Table Idea: Things for Animals

Dogs, Cats, Birds - They All Deserve a Little Holiday Cheer, Too!

Sophie Stillwell
At most holiday craft fairs, the booths or tables are, not surprisingly, holiday oriented. Decorations and holiday cards dominate the market, and close behind it are items intended for gifts. But what about our furry or feathered friends? Many pet owners love to indulge their pets around the holidays, and many nature lovers like to make sure birds don't go hungry during the winter months. If you are an animal lover, having a table or booth with items exclusively intended for four footed or winged critters may be the perfect idea for you.

This holiday craft fair idea can be done by people with a variety of skills, which makes it great for a group of friends or family. If you can cook, think about doing gourmet dog treats and biscuits. Cat treats are more challenging - they are known for being finicky after all - but if you have gardening talents, consider making a simple 'indoor garden' of grass and other edible plants safe for felines.

If you can knit or sew, a few ideas may be pet beds, sweaters, or holiday costumes for pets (for example, a set of elf booties and hat). Crossover coats/harnesses are very popular with small pet owners - it is a sturdy coat that attaches with Velcro and has a metal loop on the back to attach to a leash. A quick search on google will bring up many patterns, or you can purchase one at most pet stores and imitate the construction. Leashes and collars are also very simple to make, and matching sets make a fun gift for both cat and dog lovers.

To cater to the bird lovers at your holiday craft fair, you can offer suet cakes in many forms - a standard square form or something more festive like a bell or wreath shape. Another appealing item for bird lovers is a pure bird seed cake. This is a formed cake made of nothing but bird seed and a binder to hold it together (either egg whites or a non-toxic waterproof glue - the glue won't harm the birds since they crack the seeds and eat the nut meat inside, but you should still use non-toxic glue). They are VERY inexpensive to make and you can add ribbon to decorate. A bonus is that the birds can also use the ribbon for nesting material.

Each of the ideas mentioned here have several recipes or instructions available for you on the Internet. The most difficult to find recipe is for the pure bird seed cakes, which seems to be a guarded secret among those who craft them.
