Holiday Crafts: Simple Clay Snowmen

David Slate
For this simple craft project you will need air drying or bake-able clay, toothpicks, craft paint, glue and other miscellaneous craft materials of your choosing.

Take a small lump of the clay and roll into a smooth ball shape. Place onto a foiled cookie sheet and lightly press down with your finger, slightly flattening the bottom and top. Take your toothpick and stick it into the clay ball until it touches the pan.

Take a slightly smaller lump of clay and roll this out as well, placing it onto the sheet pan and pressing slightly. This time take this clay ball and slide it onto the toothpick until it rests on the ball below it. You will then repeat this process for the third, and smallest, clay ball. Allow enough of the toothpick to still remain at the top in order to place the hat which you will sculpt next and attach. Depending on which type of clay you have you will either bake or air dry the clay for the required amount of time.

After the clay has dried and cooled it is time to bring them to life. Use craft paint to add color and detail to your snowmen, painting on eyes and a mouth. For bolder colors and sheen use model paints to decorate your figures, these can be a bit more dangerous for children to use so always make sure they're supervised. You can make a carrot nose from the clay separately and glue it on after baking or air drying. Allow the glue to dry before painting as well. You can also glue beads and glitter onto the pieces, as well as any other decorative material you can find.
