The holiday season is nearly upon us, and to anyone who grew up in a household in which decorations loomed large, it is now time to start the (sometimes) frantic search for bigger and better decorations of your own! For the Greensboro area there are several stores and shops from which to choose, and certainly you can find whatever you may need from them.

1.) Party City, located at 2637 Lawndale Drive, Greensboro (in the Lawndale Shopping Center) is a good place to start for those of you with a fun theme, or more of a party type atmosphere rather than just static decor. Although Halloween is the major theme right now, soon the store will soon be swimming in turkeys and elves in preparation for Thanksgiving and of course, Christmas. If you're looking to dress up, Party City has a huge selection of costumes, hey- you could be a giant turkey yourself! Party City also sells a large array of hanging wall ornaments, tissue paper streamers to give a color theme (orange and brown for Turkey Day, Green and Red for Christmas) as well as party favors and napkin sets for the traditional approach. Store hours are: M-F 9:00am - 9:00pm, Sat. 9:00am - 9:00pm, Sunday 10:00am - 6:00pm. For more info call: 336-286-9977

2.) Season's Greetings, located at 511 State St., Greensboro, is a Christmas themed shop open all year 'round, known for having hard to find ornaments, as well as providing brand names such as Radko and Waterford. Other items you can expect to find here are nativity scenes, nut crackers, a wide array of gifts, as well as collectibles. Season's Greetings is open: Monday through Saturday 10:00am - 5:00pm. Closed Sundays. To contact the store: 336-378-1571.

3.) Caryl's Christmas Shop is another specialty shop that focuses primarily on Christmas (as the name suggests) and the traditional themes that everyone knows and wants to present in their homes. They offer a large selection of ornaments certain to win a spot on your mantle this year, as well as lighting sets, ornamental trees, exquisite floral arrangements, nativity scenes, and many other favorites. The best part about this shop is their customer service. They are very knowledgeable about their products and are more than willing to help you with anything you might ask of them. This isn't something you will find with the larger retail stores, and the prices are surprisingly fair when you consider that this is a specialty shop. Drop by and take a look around and see for yourself, and if you don't see what you want- ask! Store hours are: M-F 10:00am - 5:00pm. Saturday 10:00am - 2:00pm. Closed on Sunday. Caryl's Christmas Shop is located at 1715 Battleground Avenue, Greensboro- right by Pastabilities restaurant.

4.) Target... I know- boooooo, hisssss! But let's be honest, Target is awesome when it comes to finding decorations for any holiday, sometimes months and months in advance! The huge retail giants are sometimes known by some to be the Grinch of the holiday season, as they only care about profit, and are not as well suited to help customers one on one. The vast stores might not seem as warm and inviting as some of the quaint specialty shops, but when is the last time you went to Target and didn't find what you were looking for? What are you looking for this holiday season? Target has it. Ornamental pillows, hanging snowflake mobiles, angels, toy trains, candles, lighted figurines, fake trees, stockings, ornaments for the fake tree, stuffed animal turkeys, Pilgrim dolls, Baby New Year dolls, wreaths- fake ones that look real and some that just look real fake! Place mats, wall hangers, the hand-held things that you shake and snow falls on the tiny landscape. Really, they have it all. I'm not saying don't shop at the smaller stores, but if they don't have what you want, come here. Plus there are three Target locations in Greensboro: 2701 Lawndale Drive (336-286-2511), 1212 Bridford Parkway (336-856-1066), and 1628 Highwoods Blvd. (336-455-9900). Store hours for all locations: M-F 8:00am - 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 10:00pm, and Sunday 8:00am - 9:00pm.

5.) JR Cigar, yes, I mentioned a Cigar shop. If you have to ask, you ain't from around here, are ya boy? JR is probably more well known in central N.C. than any of the retail giants. Though it is a good twenty minutes outside of Greensboro, it is almost always associated with going to or from Greensboro. It is located at 2589 Eric Lane, Burlington. But you'll see it from I-40, and you will stop, make no mistake about it. JR has a ready supply of Christmas figurines- baby Jesus in the manger, Santa in his sleigh, snowmen, and this is just what's on the floor in June! Come by in the fall and you're certain to find nativity scenes, Styrofoam turkeys, pumpkins (both ceramic and real), lighting sets, stocking, streamers for holiday parties, and even matching plate sets with the likeness of Jesus or Elvis right on 'em! If you want to throw a really great holiday bash complete with gifts for your guests- you can get Zippo lighters with any person or thing's likeness right on metal face. Light me up, would ya Jesus! And, by all means, don't forget about the walk in humidor... this is North Carolina you know, where else can you buy holiday decor and then fire up a nice stogie?

So, take your pick of these stores and shops. Some of you might be traditionalists and lean towards the smaller shops, while others might like the variety the larger stores can offer. Location of each store is also a consideration, if you have a neighborhood shop that you know and love, then by all means don't abandon it. But at the same time, it would be a shame to blow off any of these places just because you didn't feel like driving across town. Shop around, see what is out there, and between all of these choices, I'm sure you will find anything and everything you could want for the holidays creeping up on us slowly but surely. Happy Holidays!
