The Holidays are stressful enough, and money not stretching as far as it used to doesn't help. People that have large families tend to feel the pains of gift buying a little more than others. There are simple solutions to ease your Holiday woes and still share in the gift of giving.
Buying only for the children of the family is a good start. As we mature, the Holidays begin to be less about material things and more about faith and spending time with family and friends. Adults are happy when the children of the family are excited by gifts they receive, so focus on the kids, and the adults will be content just having their loved ones around.
When it comes to children, toy advertisements and commercials offer some added help. There are also popular cartoons that have their own line of clothing, toys, and decorative items that children love. Ben Ten, Power Rangers, Dora the Explorer, and the standard super heroes are a few choices that have many different items up for purchase at about any retail store imaginable. If toys or clothing seem to be a little risky, ask the child's parents what kind of posters they have on walls, or who their favorite character is on shows they watch, and purchase an item for the child's room that can be used year round. An example would be: My son has a Spiderman bed, complete with sheets and comforter, so if someone bought him a Spiderman lamp; he would have an additional piece to his theme that he doesn't already have.
Drawing names out of a hat can help out a lot when the family is growing. Even the little ones can get in on the fun and present a member of the family with a gift they chose. If each member of your household drawing a name still runs too far into the budget, you can improvise with a "family gift." The family gift could be a game they can all play together, a great DVD, or a decorative piece the family can display in their home. Having your household family members help pick the gift can be fun and relieve the pressure of one person having to pick the gift for everyone.
If you have a knack for web design, building websites for family members to display their own vacation photos, family snapshots, and latest news would be a gift that keeps on giving. Everyone could enjoy recent photos and updates without waiting on the postman to deliver pictures in the mail or letters. There are free website services with easy to use web builders, so even family members or friends not website savvy could have no trouble uploading their latest photos and information. This idea will also save you the trouble of meandering through over crowded malls and shopping centers in search of something that will be well received.
Buy gifts earlier and spread the buying over a period of months. Buying gifts throughout the year can alleviate a lot of the stress of purchasing gifts for large families. You can buy them as many or as few at a time as you can afford, and store them in a closet or attic until the Holidays are upon us, ready to be wrapped and tagged. Make sure to make a list of what gift was purchased for whom, in case you forget if they are bought too far in advance. Clothing gifts can be bought well ahead of time, but make sure to get at least a size or two larger than the current size for children so that the clothing won't be outgrown before it's worn. Some stores have the ability to print out gift receipts you can wrap with the clothing, in case you misjudged your purchase - the items can be exchanged for the correct size.
Holiday shopping doesn't have to make up the majority of your November and December months. Planning ahead, and being creative is most often a good recipe for an easy gift purchasing season.

Post a CommentI hate drawing names. It runs completely counter to the spirit of giving at Christmas. I want to thoughtfully choose a gift I can afford for each member of my family.
I feel your pain, Heather. My husband is one of 11 kids.
Great ideas. My husband has a ridiculously large family and it becomes increasingly difficult every year.
Thank you for reading, Jennifer!
