.Circular saw, every carpenter that does any work building things will need a circular saw. There are several different types available. Some have cords and some run by rechargeable batteries. There are also several brands to choose from, a good one to consider is the Dewalt. They range in price anywhere between $40-$300 dollars.
.Tape measure, a tape measure is very important to a carpenter. They will need this for almost every job they do. You can find them in various lengths, I would recommend getting them the 30-foot tape measure. It should be long enough for their daily needs. A good tape measure to purchase would be the Craftsman's 30-foot steel measuring tape. It sells for 16.99 at Sears and comes with a lifetime warranty. This is a major thing for someone who will use his or her tape measure on a daily basis.
.Reciprocating saw, this could really come in handy for a carpenter when they are doing any type of demolition. Or if they need to cut a variety of materials and they can't fit the circular saw in place. One I would recommend would be the Porter cable reciprocating saw, it could be purchased at Sears or any other store selling the Porter Cable brand. It retails for around one hundred dollars. They also come in corded or cordless versions depending on the persons needs. If they do a lot of jobs where there isn't any power the cordless might be the way to go. Be sure to include a few blades for different types of materials such as wood and metal.
.A Level, this is important tool for any carpenter. They have several jobs where items need to be exactly level. They make different types of levels including a standard box level or a laser level that will project a line around the surface showing where its level. They can both be found at any home improvement store such as Lowe's or Home Depot. I would recommend getting one that comes in a case to protect it.
.Utility knife, this is a great tool for a carpenter. It can be used in various ways and for several different jobs. They are nice to keep in their tool belt. I would recommend one that has blade storage built in, this way they don't have to keep going to find more blades they have them with them at all times. Home Depot offers a nice on that includes blade storage and a carry case. They also offer a lifetime warranty. It sells for $14.97.Around the holiday you will usually find it on sale. This would make a great stocking stuffer for the carpenter on your list.
.A Job site Radio, any carpenter I have met likes to have music while they are working, but this type of work can be hard on a normal radio. So that's why I am recommending the Bosch Power box Radio and CD player. It has both a radio and a CD player built into it. Also included is a compartment to charge the Bosch batteries for their cordless tools, and it has a four way outlet built in. You can also get these job radios in different brands, such as Dewalt, Black and Decker, and Ryobi. They can range in price anywhere from $25-$200 dollars depending on the features they offer. They are much more sturdy and can handle being dropped or thrown into the back of a truck at the end of the day.
There are many other great products you could choose for the carpenter on your list. If you can't decide or don't know what they already have you could get them a gift card to the local home improvement store.
