Holiday Gift Ideas for Music Lovers

L. Brown
Starting in October, many people begin the yearly quest for the perfect gift. For those who are looking for something for a music lover, this can seem especially difficult. Music tastes are very personal, and even if a person likes a certain genre, they may not like a certain artist. In fact, just because they like a certain artist doesn't mean that they like every CD the artist ever published. Here are some tips to make choosing a gift for a music lover easier.

If you know their favorite band, and you are certain they do not have a CD, buy it. Even if they don't like that CD, it's the thought that counts, and it shows you really took the time to find out who they like. But be very careful not to get them a CD they already have, because this shows the opposite. It says that you did not take the time to get to know them very well at all, and considering you are buying them a CD of their favorite band, it's doubly insulting.

An better idea though is to buy a rare CD or album. It shows that you took the time to find out their favorite, and you really went out of your way to get something special for them. This is not difficult, especially around Christmas time, if you search Ebay or various online stores. Even searching international stores can yield some treasures, because they may not have easy access to that particular CD here.

Also, concert tickets can be a great idea if you know their favorite artist or band. That way, even if they dislike a certain CD, chances are high that they will hear a range of their favorite old and new songs at the concert. Make sure you get two tickets for them, so that they can take a friend. If you're lucky, they may even ask you to go to the concert with them.

If you do not know their favorite band, it's not a problem. If you know their favorite genre, you can get them a magazine subscription dedicated to that genre. There are magazines dedicated to almost every specific type of music, and because of the Internet, it's fairly easy to find them.

If you do not know their favorite genre, you can always get them a gift certificate so that they can pick out their own favorites. Sometimes, getting a gift certificate to an online store, such as Amazon.com may be the best solution, because they offer a wider range of music. Or you can always get them a magazine subscription to a magazine that takes a broad look at music, such as Rolling Stone.

If you are a Secret Santa, but you want to get something better than a gift certificate, you might decide to give them an unusual gift. There are CDs which feature choral groups singing sea shanties, or a CD with bluegrass versions of Metallica. These are fun and listenable, and the person may discover that they actually enjoy it.

For those who are into creating music instead of listening to it, sheet music and instruments are always appreciated. There is a wide variety of sheet music available, and you can find a wide range online. For instruments, the store clerks can help you find something appropriate if you don't know much about their instrument of choice. For those on a tight budget, sheet music, reeds, guitar strings, and other similar musical tools can be very welcome, without costing very much money.

Whatever your choice, putting a little thought into the decision now will really make them smile when they open your present. Take a little time to discover what they enjoy, and try to find a gift to match their personality. And when they say "thank you" they will mean it.
