Holiday Gifts on a Budget

April Griffus

As much as we would all like to provide a Christmas for our families filled with expensive gifts, sometimes it's just not possible. There are times when paying the bills to keep a roof over our heads has to prevail. This does not mean you good intentions have to go to waste. Luckily there are many things we can do and places we can go to make the holiday still filled with joy. Due to my own financial hardship this year I have used all of these resources myself and I will tell you, things don't seem so bad anymore. Sometimes we just have to take things into our own hands and do what we can. It also doesn't hurt to ask for help.

There are many places and organizations willing to help families in need over the holidays. Depending on where you live these may vary. Churches are very giving and usually organize some funds to provide gifts for families who can't afford them. Also check with your local health department, Department of human services, or Family Independence Agency for information on Emergency Assistance, Toys for Tots, or something similar. It also doesn't hurt to check local bulletin boards to see if there is anything posted along those lines.

Make gifts! Gifts can be handmade and actually mean more to the recipient. Depending on what you have and your skills many different things can be done. Baking up baskets of goodies is a great idea. Make up different kinds of cookies, candy, and fudge to fill a basket. Tie a bow around it and you have a gift! Crochet, Knit, and Cross Stitched items are also great. All sorts of craft ideas can be found on the web made out of things you most likely have laying around the house. A unique idea I found was to write or print out many different recipes on 4x6 cards or pieces of paper and fill a cheap photo album. You end up with a lovely book of recipes to give.

If you have a little bit of money you can make that go a long way by going to a dollar store. There are many chain stores now that have everything in the store for just a buck. There are also the other dollar stores that have things over a dollar but still are cheaper than department stores. You can make $20 go a long way in one of these stores so they are great for a limited budget.

Don't hesitate to hand make cards also. In my opinion receiving a hand made card is better than the store bought ones because the person giving it actually put time and effort in to it. That really means a lot.

Hopefully some of this helped you get some ideas to have a happy holiday season. I wish the best to you and yours this year!

  • Making gifts and cards is a great way to save.
  • Dollar stores make money go a long way.
  • Organizations and Churches will help.
$10 in a department store won't buy you much, but in a dollar store you can buy 10 things!
