Holiday Gifts for Seniors: Consumable Gifts that Won't Take Up Space

Jackie DiGiovanni
What is a perfect holiday gift for seniors? The answer is something that is consumable, that will be used up, that will not take up space forever. Many seniors are in a stage of downsizing. They move into a smaller house, an apartment, or a residential community. They have less storage space. They entertain less. They have accumulated furniture, dishes, accessories, collectibles, and books throughout their lives, and now they are winnowing their collections.

Some seniors are set in how they do things. They cook the same meals. They pursue the same interests. They go out to the same restaurants. They have the same circle of friends. They already have the things they need to live the lives they are used to.

A lot of seniors do not relish getting more stuff. They have no use for more stuff and no place to store more stuff. They enjoy getting things they can use and use up. They like receiving gifts that align with their interests without taking up space.

There are seniors with special dietary concerns. They may be diabetic, or on a healthy heart regime. They may need less sodium or low fat meals. The food industry welcomes these special food needs. Consider a gift of prepared food that can be kept in the freezer or cupboard that fits the diet plans of the senior. Consider a gift card to a local grocery store so they can select their own food. Consider a food-of-the-month club that sends fresh fruit, or tea, or coffee, or some special treat that is included in the special diet.

Seniors like to eat out, like everyone else. If a fixed income is limiting the frequency of these outings, consider a gift card to a franchise restaurant. Many chain restaurants and most fast food restaurants offer gift cards. The low fat options at Wendy's and Subway are good for seniors, too. A gift card at a local restaurant may provide the senior with the chance to treat his or her guests.

Subscriptions are good ideas for some seniors. If there is a favorite magazine or journal, a great gift would be purchasing another year or two on the subscription. Prepaying a membership in a movie service like Netflix would appear to the movie buff. Blockbuster offers gift cards for renting tapes and DVDs.

There may be a local community center that has programming for seniors. An annual membership would be a good gift idea. Active seniors play golf and tennis. They swim and ski. Prepaid passes at nearby resorts and clubs are a good gift ideas.

There are gift cards for department stores, discount stores, gasoline, cell phone minutes, and anything imaginable. There are even all purpose gift cards from credit card companies.

Think consumable when deciding on holiday gifts for seniors.

I am one of those "seniors" that does not want more stuff! I keep telling my kids to give me things for the garden or books. Books, by the way, are not "stuff." They are necessities. :)
