Holiday Home Decorating: Cheap Thanksgiving & Christmas Home Décor Craft Ideas

Nikki
Decorating your home for Thanksgiving and Christmas helps to create a warm festive atmosphere. You don't have to spend a lot of money on home décor in order to make your home warm and inviting. This holiday season bring the spirit and beauty of the outdoors inside your home by using the natural decorative gifts already provided by Mother Nature.

1. Arrange vividly colored selections of seasonal fruits such as oranges, figs and cranberries inside of wooden bowls or baskets and display them around your home. Add a few sprigs of fresh mint to add even more color. Use them as centerpieces for the family dining table or place them on the mantle above the fireplace.

2. Display gourds and squash on a large glass serving platter and add baby pinecones around the vegetables.

3. Place bright colored lemons, limes, oranges and cranberries in a wooden basket and add sprigs of fresh pine and use this as a centerpiece for the table.

4. Create a mini Christmas tree by using small twigs that you gather from your yard and tuck them down inside of a decorative glass vase and line the bottom with baby pinecones to help support the branches. Attach more baby pinecones to the branches with glue and then add acorns and miniature Christmas tree ball ornaments.

5. Create a floral arrangement using fresh wildflowers and grass from your yard.

6. Create a pinecone tree by placing pinecones down inside of a wire frame and then glue the pinecones together and once the wire frame is halfway full set a miniature pine tree down inside the frame and then set this frame down inside of a pot big enough to hold it up.

7. Create a piece of art from nature and display it on a wall in your home. Take a walk along the shore of a lake or beach and find that perfect shaped piece of wood that speaks to you in a special way and then frame the piece of wood. Spruce it up even more by placing twigs from a pine tree inside of the frame on each corner.

8. Use sprigs of fresh pine and wild growing grass to fill a wicker basket and place baby pinecones on top.

9. Make a pinecone garland to display from the mantle or from above the front door. All you need to do this is to attach pinecones together at the stem with a wire and run the wire from one to another. You can use either thumbtacks or small carpenter's nails to hang the pinecone garland.

10. Create an indoor herb garden to sit on the kitchen windowsill. Plant fresh dill, parsley, sage, thyme and cinnamon and the aromas that fill the air will be welcoming during the holiday season. Use these fresh herbs to season all of the dishes you create during Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I’m looking to sell my house soon and I only just got a house valuation and the estate agent told me to tone down my Christmas decor this year. My wife was the least impressed because she absolutely loves decorating the house with orange segments a gold leaf. But I guess if you’re selling up, you need to be aware of people that may be anti Christmas too.

Good one, Nikki--Something I do almost every fall is to go around the countryside gathering plant material that has died and dried in place. They be absolutely beautiful if arranged in vases. You could even spray them for Christmas. It does not sound nearly as pretty as it is. Try it sometime. Do watch for snakes while gathering and be aware that the plant materials may still have a few bugs. One year while doing this, I looked down on my arm and there were a dozen or so ticks!
