Holiday Horror as Child is Abducted in Portugal

Maddie Taken While Parents Have Dinner

f.w.
The parents of abducted Madeleine McCann left their three toddlers locked in their apartment in Playa dd Luz, Portugal, while they went for something to eat and a few beers. The place where they were on vactation offered an 'in-house babyminding service', and, it's easy to prontificate at how parents should watch their children however, to the parents of little Maddie, their holiday ended in complete horror.

The parents of the missing little girl Madeleine McCann marked her fourth birthday yesterday and pleaded with people to keep searching for their abducted daughter. Gerry and Kate McCann begged "please keep looking, please keep praying, please bring Madeleine home". They were speaking after attending a candle-lit vigil in Portugal on Friday at which prayers were offered for Maddie's safe return.

Sniffer dogs have been in action around the apartment where Maddie was snatched a week ago and, according to local Portuguese reports, may have picked up a scent from the McCann's apartment. Rewards have been offered for anyone with information leading to the safety of Maddie with entrepeneurs including Sir Richard Branson (Virgin Airlines), Sir Philip Green (retail chain boss) and British National Newspapers; the reward is now totalling E3.5 million.

The police in Portugal are following reports of a blonde woman and two men acting suspiciously, shopkeepers in a nearby village of Bargau confirmed yesterday that they had shown CCTV printout of the three people who looked "English". All our thoughts are with the parents and our prayers for Maddie.

Did the British Government still gonna aloud to this denaturated family to have other kids? I think that probably that Hotel is the only one in Europe without CCTV's. Did anybody ask the Portugal Police about a oppnion in this mess and about this ''family''?

T.J. Interesting situation you mention about children in public places. Aside from all of the potential dangers of leaving a child unattended, am I the only one who thinks it is also disrespectful to other adults? I can tell you before I became a parent there were numerous times I felt that I had to watch or "babysit" children whose parents weren't paying attention to them. Being a parent doesn't make me any more reliable to keep an eye on other children when at the park. I have my own child to supervise, and she is my FIRST priority. So, if something were amiss with another child and might not notice it as quickly as the childless person who is simply sitting and reading, etc. I think too many parents assume someone else is watching their child in their absence, and that is arrogant to expect someone to assume that responsibility.

I lived in Europe when it was common to park your baby buggy outside the cheese shop while ordering. I think leaving three toddlers in a strang room is another story.I hope she comes home soon.

tj, i hear you i have twins too. alone is not a word i know either.. they both wear the potty n their heads when i use the bathroom. lol at this age order out and be catered at a hotel... share your new foods. i love being with them , it goes fast .. i love em love em love em. again very sad situation.. my best to you.

perhaps they normally have a nanny and thought that the babies were ok. in their heads after all the babies were sleeping. it was a great mistake. it souds like some one was just waiting for a window to sneak that beautiful baby away. all mom or dad would have had to do is turn their back for a second even if in public.. it can happen to anyone but please stay close to your children and keep them safe. some hotels have sitters for hire. i freak out if i can not see my babies in our fenced in back yard for more than a few seconds... my husband who reads magazines while watching the outside and teen son think im a freak.. so be it! i pray that angels are watching over maddie. i am sure the parents anger at themselves is far worse than anyone else being angry with them.

It seems like a lot of the disagreement over the McCann's decision stems from cultural differences between the Britain and the U.S. In the U.S. I know no one who would ever leave a 2-year-old child unattended. The fact that they're doctors is what surprises many people because in the U.S. it is typically a doctor or pediatrician who carefully goes through the checklists at every well-child visit making sure parents are informed of hazards within the home. It's typically impossible to childproof when on vacation, but obviously electrical outlets or unrestrained furniture turned out to be the least of their worries.

I have two two year olds. Most days I can't even go to the bathroom without one of them getting into something. Leaving toddlers awake or asleep for any length of time is just wrong. I really hope she is found.

I agree with you Beth. And aside from the danger of leaving three children under the age of 4 unattended, there are countless dangers a hotel room can present had one of them woken up: electrical outlets, furniture that is not tethered to the wall, bath tub/toilet, choking hazards, etc. Obviously those dangers pale in comparison to what has happened, but they were possible hazards nonetheless.
