In Martinsville, you will find plenty of churches whose programs offer some of the best seasonal messages and warm atmospheres. There are well over one hundred churches in this little town, and most will be decorated in holiday lights. We also have several businesses that decorate for the holidays as well. I'm sure many anticipate seeing the beauty of the square all lit in holiday lights, evergreens, and bright red bows. But there are a few displays of holiday lights that you should not miss in Martinsville, Indiana.

On Saturday, November 6 this year, volunteers countywide began decorating Jimmy Nash City Park to create one of the best Martinsville holiday lights displays in the city. And by the way, it's called Christmas in the Park, not Holiday in the Park. The display, which extends throughout the park property, was the idea of Raquel Zike, who started the tradition after wondering if there was a fun way to bring holiday lights to one location for the enjoyment of families who want to see a lot of holiday lights. Traditionally Martinsville businesses and organizations donate to the Martinsville holiday lights Christmas in the Park, which will open this year on November 25. Lights are on from 6 pm - 10 pm. Though the program has hit snags in the past, things this year are running smoothly.

Santa will be available on opening night and a few nights throughout the season along with Mrs. Claus. It's a great photo opportunity, as he will be relaxing in an enclosed shelter house with a warm fire blazing in the fireplace. Local musical talents like the Martinsville High School Madrigals Choir have also been frequent attendees to the holiday lights display, which is accented by Christmas music played on loud speakers. The holiday lights are both old-fashioned and modern varieties, and the entire display is encored by special Christmas trees near the lights display exit. A donation box is available for those who want to contribute to this exciting event.

The city courthouse will be tastefully decorated this year, and the surrounding light fixtures will likely be decorated cheerfully as well. With its location being in the center of the Hoosier state, Martinsville is typically snowy during the holiday season, which makes the holiday light displays even more beautiful when reflected off a crisp white blanket of downy flakes. Some of the best decorated Christmas displays can be found on Gray Street, where tradition places one of the largest displays of decorated homes in town. Another holiday lights display is located down Washington Street, where families have been decking the halls for years. The festive Martinsville holiday lights displays abound in town, as citizens show their holiday spirit.

Many are anticipating the display by Jack and Gloria Carroll on Mapleturn Lane. They have some of the brightest and most eclectic holiday lights in Martinsville, complete with a little train that chugs 120 feet around the lawn. It is unknown if the live deer Buddy will return. The Carroll family uses lights and handmade decorations, most of which are animated. Jack Carroll has created amazing decorative items which are nestled among the store bought delights. People come from miles around just to catch a festive glimpse.

Long ago, the local Newberry's five and dime, now Antiques on Main, boasted warm displays with the latest toys. Nowadays, you can look into the windows and see festive collectibles available to purchase, including classic Martinsville glass and old hickory furniture. It's not certain whether Antiques on Main will have a holiday lights display or not, but this season seems a little merrier than the last, and will hopefully boast plenty of holiday sales.

Martinsville holiday lights displays like the one at the Jimmy Nash City Park are some of the state's most memorable, sporting such clever characters as Saint Nick and Charlie Brown. You can't help but feel festive when you drive through with your family and experience the glow of true Christmas spirit.
