Holiday Photo Wreath Craft Project

Nicole A.
Celebrate the holidays by making a wreath that highlights members of your family. A homemade wreath can be used to celebrate more than one holiday including Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's. Learn how to assemble a photo wreath using basic household products and school supplies.

Materials needed to make a holiday photo wreath:

1 Wire clothing hanger
1 Spool each of red, brown, orange and yellow ribbon
5 Sheets of 9x12 inch green construction paper
5 Sheets of 9x12 inch yellow construction paper
5 Sheets of 9x12 inch orange construction paper
1 Brown, orange and red crayon each
1 Bottle of school glue or rubber cement
1 Portrait or single-shot photo of each family member
3 Photos of the entire family
Scissors
Autumn leaf clip-art template
Hole punch

Instructions to make a holiday photo wreath:
Stretch and bend the wire hanger into a circle shape, keeping the top hook in tact. Cut the leaf shape out from your clip-art template if necessary using scissors. Leaf shapes may need to be cut out if you printed the template from a computer or copied pages from a clip-art book. Otherwise, leaf cut-out shapes that are sold as décor at stationery stores can also be used as stencils to trace shapes for this holiday photo wreath craft project.

Trace your leaf template shape onto the green construction paper sheets using the red crayon. The size of your leaf cut-out will determine the amount of shapes you can trace onto one sheet of construction paper. Do not add the stem to your traced shapes if one is present on the clip-art template. Repeat this step by tracing the leaf shape onto your yellow construction paper sheets using the orange crayon. Trace the leaf shape onto the orange construction paper sheets using the brown crayon.

Set the main leaf template aside and then cut out your leaf shapes from the construction paper sheets using scissors. Cut outside of your traced crayon lines so that they will still be in tact and visible once all of the construction paper shapes are assembled. Cut all of your family photos into leaf shapes using the main template as a guide. If the photo is larger than your clip-art template, place the leaf on top of the photo and cut around the finished shape. The remaining portion of the photo should have a shape that is almost identical to the construction paper cut-outs.

If the photos are smaller than the main template, cut them into leaf shapes based on your observation of what it should look like. Attach one photo each to a construction paper shape of your choice using glue. Allow the photo leaves to dry and then put holes in these shapes using a hole punch. The punched holes should be near the top of each leaf shape where the stem would likely start, leaving about one-half inch of space near the edge to help secure it on your holiday photo wreath. Repeat this step to add holes to your blank construction paper leaf shapes.

Cut off pieces off red ribbon, thread them through the holes of your green leaves and then tie the leaf shapes to your wire hanger circle. Repeat this step using the brown and orange ribbon with your yellow leaf shapes. Tie the orange leaf shapes to your wire hanger circle using the yellow ribbon. Tie your photo shapes to different areas of the wire hanger circle using the ribbon color of your choice. All photo leaves should have at least two solid leaves of a different color between them.

Make one large bow at the top of the hanger, around the hook using all of the ribbons. The finished bow should include multiple colors of ribbon such as red, brown, orange and yellow. Hang your finished holiday photo wreath on a door or wall in the home. This holiday wreath craft project can also be used as an office decoration.
