Holiday Returns for Your Crappy Tech Gifts

Which Store Has the Easiest, Stress-free Return Policy?

Hot Writer
The following information was obtained through the store's website and the handy customer service departments. Yes Josh, it was I who called three times in a row.

Wal-Mart
If you're looking to return a gift to Wal-Mart and are expecting a special return policy, don't be surprised to learn there is not one in place. Computer hardware and digital players such as Mp3's, video players and GPS systems have a 15 day return policy as of the receipt date. This is important if you're looking for a cash refund. PC components and accessories have a 45 day return policy with your receipt in hand. Wal-Mart is good about returns with a receipt and without one. I've never had a bad experience but they do have a limit on the amount of returns in a year without a receipt. I learned that the hard way. Other than that , you will probably be given a store card for the return of your merchandise, which in my case spends like cash anyways.

Best Buy
The rep at Best Buy informed me that their return policy is extended to January 31st. The website also stresses that only "qualifying products" are under this policy for Holiday Returns. Gift purchases that were made (per your receipt) between November 1st to December 24th qualify for Best Buy's Holiday Return Policy. Store credits are given for items below $50.00 without a receipt and they also have a "no receipt" limit. The customer service rep. advised that anything over $50.00 without a receipt would have to have a manager's approval. In the past, I've had not so easy return experiences with them; receipt or not. Hope yours is better!

Circuit City
Another store filled with my favorite gadgets has an extended Holiday Return Policy in order. "During the holidays, we give you extra time to make returns so you can shop with peace of mind" (According to Circuit City). Aren't they thoughtful? Well, if Aunt Linda (Bless her heart) bought that crappy Mp3 player anytime from November 15th to December 24th, with your receipt, you should be able put the money towards a new Zune or iPod. Items such as music or video players with a normal 30 day policy can be returned up until January 28th. For computer related items that have a normal 14-day policy, the policy is extended to January 8th.

BrandSmart
Is there a BrandSmart in your town? Looking for a special Holiday Return Policy? Stop looking. There is not one. The customer service rep explained that it depends on the item. He said they won't take back Mp3 players if they have been opened, with or without the receipt. Huh? He went on to explain that household products like toasters (even used) can be taken back with or without the receipt. I called another location, talked to a female rep this time; she said that you have 30 days with a receipt. Period. No sugar coating or workarounds. So, if you're holding on to an electronic device from this store, just go up there. It's better to duke it out over the counter than over the phone.
