Holiday Shopping During an Economic Recession

This year might bring some difficulties for those who are suffering from our economic recession. Many people might be worried about how they are going to buy gifts for all their closest friends and family this holiday season. At this day and age, most people usually stick with purchasing gifts for just close friends and family. However, 20 years ago everyone gave a gift to their mailman, newspaper boy, barber and teachers. So, why are unable to do this now? Is it because of the recession, or is it because of being lazy? The handmade present is unheard of these days. Amazon.com and Shopping malls are the collector of all holiday money. Expensive gifts have been the style of giving for the past few years. However, at this point we need another solution. With so many people out of a job, raised taxes, raised grocery bills and raised gas prices, we need a way to cut back. Here are a few ways to save money this holiday season, but still enjoy the same warm feeling when giving loved ones a gift.

1. Handmade - Making a homemade knit scarf, beautiful picture frame made from crafts, or a gift basket full of favorite foods for your very close friend or family member would not only touch their heart for giving them something so meaningful and personal, but it would also save you a lot of money.

2. A gift isn't always tangible - Instead of buying a gift, suggest having a nice dinner with the family or friends that you were planning to exchange gifts with. If you all can agree on a nice place to enjoy dinner rather than purchasing a present for each other, it could save money and you'll thoroughly enjoy the quality time.

3. E-Bay - If buying gifts is the only route you would prefer to follow during the holiday season, why not try E-Bay to locate brand items for a lower price then you would purchase them in a store. Not only could you save money on brand items, but you can find an item that someone has been desperately trying to find, but doesn't exists in any shopping mall.

4. Family time - Off hand if you're thinking about how to purchase gifts for everyone in your family, your family is probably trying to figure out the same problem. Why not have everyone in the family agree on doing something together, such as a family portrait, or renting a cabin together at a near lake or mountain. Sharing a weekend getaway together ensures bonding time, and less money out of everyone's wallet for gifts.

5. Yankee Swap - A Yankee swap consists of everyone purchasing one gift, and putting it into a pile to let everyone choose which they want. The gifts have to be wrapped, and made into a surprise. This game is fun for a family to participate in, and instead of everyone having to buy a present for all family members; they only have to buy one gift.

The best thing to keep in mind is that everyone is suffering together, and the holiday season doesn't need to reflect on this awful recession. There have always been ways of enjoying the holiday season whether you are a millionaire, or in the middle of a financial struggle. The most important part of the holiday season, is to be with your friends and family.
