Holiday Theme Trees

Unique Holiday Decor for Your Home

Cindy Vee
Traditional trees are beautiful - and expected - and maybe just a little bit boring. Why not choose a theme tree this year for your holiday decorating?

Theme Christmas trees can be inspired by your favorite hobby, sports team, your occupation, or any of your other interests.

Almost any small object can be made into a Christmas tree ornament using a glue gun and a length of wire, cord or ribbon.

Here are some themes to try:

Flights of Fancy

A whimsical tree covered with butterfly ornaments and feathers tucked into its branches will make your holiday guests take notice. Butterflies and feathers are available from www.orientaltrading.com and at dollar stores. The butterflies have two wires on the bottom which can be twisted around the trees branches. This theme would be striking on a pastel or white tree.

For the Birds

Cardinal ornaments along with other red ornaments on a white tree would make a stunning addition to your holiday décor.

Natural Notions

Small sticks or twigs, dried wildflowers or even weeds can be tucked into the branches of your holiday tree. Pinecones and acorns can be made into hanging ornaments by attaching loops of raffia or twine with hot glue.

Seaside Memories

Take the shells collected on your vacations and turn them into ornaments. You can drill small holes in the shells and loop gold wire or cord through the holes to hang them. You could embellish the shells by adhering rhinestones and beads with hot glue for an elegant look.

Nautical netting can be draped around the base of the tree in lieu of a tree skirt.

Coffee, Tea or Tree?

Use a child's tea set to create this theme tree. Tie ribbons through the handles of the tea cups and attach ribbons to the saucers with a glue guns. Tie ribbons to the spoons from the set. Tea bags can also be hung from the branches of the tree.

A coordinating tablecloth may be draped around the base of the tree as a tree skirt.

A small Christmas tree decorated using this theme would bring the holiday spirit to your dining room or kitchen.

Color Coordinated

Your theme may simply be the use of only one or two colors on your tree. Consider non-traditional holiday colors such as purple, teal or fuchsia. Look for lights, ornaments and ribbons in your chosen color to adorn the tree.

Use your imagination to create a unique Christmas tree that your family and friends will not soon forget
