Holiday Traditions for Your Office

Make Some New Office Traditions This Year

Heather Shockney
Are the only traditions at your office for the holidays ones that include playing elevator Christmas music? If the only sign that its Christmas involves a Santa hat on the guy that had a little too much to drink at the office party then this list is for you. This year start some office traditions worth keeping year to year.

1. Have the office adopt a family from the community and provide Christmas for them. Provide Christmas dinner fixings and warm winter clothes. Don't forget about the toys for the children. This tradition could provide help to a family that otherwise might not have anything for Christmas.

2. Have the office volunteer to help out at the local soup kitchen or a church. They could help serve dinner to the homeless and less fortunate. There is nothing more rewarding then helping others.

3.Have a tradition of taking up a collection in the office and then donating it to a local charity. Maybe donate some to the local animal shelter. They need help keeping the animals fed and warm during these cold winter months. Maybe the office could ask for other businesses to contribute to a certain cause like the Salvation Army or the local food pantry. This tradition could provide a large amount of help to someone truly needing it.

4. Have an office toy drive and then donate the toys to Toys for Tots or some other local charity that provides presents to children less fortunate.

5. Have an office clothing drive for winter clothing, coats, hats, and gloves. Then donate these to the local shelter in your neighborhood. Lots of people do not have warm clothes to protect them from the weather. What could be a better office tradition then making sure people have enough warm clothes this winter.

6. Put together kits of personal hygiene products for the local homeless shelter. Include travel sizes of shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, mouthwash, deodorant, disposable razors, soap, and anything else you think a person might be able to use. These could really come in handy for someone that doesn't have the means of buying these products for themselves.

7.Have an office book drive. Have each employee bring in a new children's book then donate to the local library or a hospital that has a children's floor.

8. Have the office Christmas party at a nursing home and include all the residents. This tradition could bring joy to someone that might not get any visitors on Christmas day. Sing Christmas carols and enjoy some cookies and punch. Provide a gift for the residents such as a fleece blanket or some type of baked treat.

9.Visit the children's floor of the local hospital and sing Christmas carols to the children. Have the children join in and maybe have a stuffed animal for each child. Bring coloring books and crayons to leave for the children. Or make a donation to the floor to be used for toys and games, something to keep the child busy while they are there. This tradition could make a child that is sick feel better even if it's just for a few hours.

Do something this year in your office to help someone less fortunate. Then make this a yearly tradition and discover the joy of making someone else's life better.
