Holiday Travel Tips: Foolproof Ways to Ensure Smooth and Stress- Free Travels

Ideas for Christmas, Thanksgiving, or Any Other Time of Year

When it comes to holiday travel, most people are always looking for ways to reduce the amount of stress, time, and worry that is typically associated with this event. However, with a little careful planning and research, everyone heading out on a vacation can eliminate some unnecessary stress from their holiday travel routine.

Should you be travelling by air, remember packing guidelines for luggage: shoes on the bottom, then clothes, and finally toiletries. Toiletries must be less than three ounces, and all must fit into a zippered sandwich bag (not the large gallon-sized ones). Also, make sure your luggage is not over packed, as you will have to pay extra for an overweight bag or else be forced to purchase an additional bag.

For those travelling by car, be sure to first get a vehicle inspection to include all major fluids and tire pressure / tread wear. Next, on the day of your departure, plan on getting up a few minutes early and inspect traffic conditions to see how roadway conditions are. Many state Department of Transportation websites offer real-time traffic news. It is also helpful, should a major delay be discovered, that you plan an alternate route to your destination. While this may add a few extra miles to your trip, the amount of time saved in traffic delays could outweigh the added mileage. Also, take advantage of the traveller's information numbers posted on the side of the road for real-time travel information.

Last, all travellers need to remember their passengers. Plan for breaks and remember both humans and pets will get hungry, need to use the restroom, and become tired of being in a car as the hours pass. Do not forget plenty of children's activities, as well as a pillow and blanket for naps. Having portable snacks that are easy for kids to use by themselves helps cut down on the stress of the "I'm hungry" syndrome and allows for parents to concentrate on the road.

Wherever you go this holiday season, have fun and safe travels.
