Holiday Yard Decorating Ideas

It is almost that time again, time to get out your Christmas decorations to start decorating your home before the really cold weather sets in. When it comes to outdoor decorating there are so many new items on the market to purchase, it can make decisions on how to decorate your front yard difficult. There are inflatables, animated, wooden, and the classic decorations, all which are beautiful, but what do you choose? Do you want to have a themed display like the Peanuts, Santa workshop, or Frosty the Snowman? It can be overwhelming in choosing which way to decorate. I have some tips, to help out with front yard decorating, that I hope will give you some ideas when it comes time to decorate your front yard.

Last year I purchased one of those classic lampposts for $29.99, which I am going to place in my front yard off to the side of my front sidewalk. This lamppost has an realistic flickering flame, and an extended arm which I hang my Christmas banner. This portable lamppost gives my front yard a little bit of the Norman Rockwell look.

For my front porch railing, I am hanging pre lit evergreen garland which has green mini lights. Starting at the end of the porch, secure one end to the railing with bag ties, drape it over 1 1/2 feet and secure with another bag tie. Once the whole porch railing is draped with the garland, I tie mini red bows to each peak where I secured the garland for an additional warm look.

The next step in decorating my front yard is to wrap multi colored lights around the bushes directly in front of my house. Each bush including the small ones, get wrapped in lighting for a brilliant light display at night.

To highlight the house, I like to hang white icicle lighting from the gutters around the front of the entire house. The icicle lighting gives my home that classic look right out of a Christmas card.

Every house has some area in front that is plain. For example, a large area between two windows, or the area between a window and the roof peak. This area is perfect to place a pre-lit wreath, giving your home a more charm without over doing it.

To highlight my porch steps, I have a set of cute solar snowman greeting stakes which I place at each side of the porch. At night the snowman's face lights up in a gentle glow, welcoming each guest who visit.

Trees in front can be difficult to decorate, especially if they are tall. I have a tall tree in my front yard that I like to hang Moravian Stars in. When these stars are placed in various locations in your tree, when they light up at night these stars are truly beautiful.

For my pathway up to the porch, I have solar powered snowflake path markers that are spaced out every 3 feet on each side of the walkway. These path markers light up my walkway with a warm gentle festive glow.

On the side of my house, I have a climbing Santa, which looks like hes delivering presents. This Santa does not climb, it gives the illusion that is he is climbing up the side of the house. This cute decoration has him in action holding a 6 1/2 foot rope which we attach to the chimney, and a green gift bag over his shoulder.

In the middle of my yard, I like to display a classic Nativity scene. The first step we do, is to place 3 bales of hay in to a semi circle, then we set in place our Nativity scene, and wooden animal figures. We have a solar spot light which lights up the Nativity scene, and the wooden animal figures for a joyous display.

These are just a few ideas on holiday decorating that my spouse and I do at Christmas time. I do hope they give you some ideas on what you can do to your front yard this holiday season.
