Holidays, O Holy Days

Robin Dixon
Holidays, O holy days
what other reason
should we celebrate?
It is a time of family reunions
and personal reflection
on the rest of
our busy days.

This is when we stop
and think.
This is when we look
and listen.

To our hearts,
and yours,
and others we meet.

Why should we need
these moments of retreat?

Because the rest
of our lives
have become so unholy
with life -
our jobs,
our images,
our determination to strive
to climb a ladder too high
for us all.

These holidays
allow us
the chance
to climb back down
to humanity
and solid ground
before we fall.

So don't allow
yourself
to slip into the trap
of the business
of the holidays,

Instead,
allow
youself
to lie down
in the peace
of the holiness
of the holidays.

And maybe,
just maybe,
we can become
normal
again.

  • It is the time of returning to the origin of the meaning of holiday.
The word holiday came from the Middle English for "holy day." Yet now today's society has turned practically every known holiday into a chance for more business.
