To be more specific, I believe there are a million and eight quality film makers in the United States alone. That being said, I believe there are 4 million and 8 quality stories waiting to be shared. Unfortunately, the afore mentioned gatekeepers do not feel like these stories are of any interest to the masses. No, no, we as consumers would rather see sequels, than new torch bearers for quality films. Give us 40 year Old Virgins, and Knocked Ups, we will pass on The Last King of Scotland.
This is not to belittle successful film makers in Hollywood making a living for themselves. If someone will pay you to make Soul Plane, then make a whole fleet of Soul Planes if necessary. No this is targeted towards the laziness of Hollywood executives who rehash old tales we have already seen. Case in point, recently I rented two movies from the local Blockbuster, one was Pan's Labyrinth, the other Freedom Writers. As I began my miniature movie marathon with Freedom Writers, about 10 minutes into the movie I had to ask myself, "Haven't I already seen this flick?". The answer was yes, only it was called Dangerous Minds/187/The Substitute/High School Highetc. etc.. I laughed out loud that a movie released as recently as last year, would use the blueprint from movies 15 years prior. I thought Michelle Pfeiffer got her point across? You can imagine how relieved I was to begin watching Pan's Labyrinthand reminded of what quality film making and story telling resembled. A film not marketed for the masses as the summer big action flick, or blockbuster comedy, just simply a very, very, very good film. I told a buddy of mine I hadn't seen a movie that good since City of GodorAmores Perros. My buddy promptly answered, "Amores what?".
Life is full of balance. You need balance to understand really good and really bad. Believe it or not for every Saving Private Ryanyou need aNational Lampoon's Van Wilder. Hollywood has of late been leading towards the latter. Instead of cutting edge new wave cinema, or just outstanding scripts, Hollywood has lately been bogging our theaters down with rehashed reliable tales of John McClane Dying Harder or Pirates of The Carribean going to the World's End, but where is this years Matrix? Where is this years new way to look at a movie because of some cool camera angle or slick editing? I know it's out there, and I will continue to watch and wait.......right after I buy my Transformerstickets.
