Hollywood Theme on the Oscars

Big Night for the Hurt Locker

Ode to Classic Hollywood appeared to be the theme of the 82nd Academy Awards. Neil Patrick Harris did a Frank Sinatra-esk opening number on a stage designed like the staircase scene in Stormy Weather, where the Nicholas Brothers did a challenging dance sequence.

Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin (the first dual host since 1987) had a few jokes that resonated as the show began such as Alec Baldwin discussing the rules of voting with the academy and he said: "and then no matter what they nominate Meryl Streep." Streep has the most nominations with 16.

Steve Martin also joked: "There's that Damn Helen Mirren" then Alec Baldwin corrects him saying: "that's Dame Helen Mirren."

When pointing out the cast of Precious Steve Martin said: "Me and Gabourey have something in common, in our first movies we were both born a black child." Martin was of course referring to his first film The Jerk from 1979.

The two also joked about James Cameron and ex wife Kathryn Bigelow on how they each sent gifts to one another saying that Bigelow sent a gift with a tick (as in bomb) and Cameron sent a Toyota, playing off the Toyota recall.

Another interesting moment during the Oscars was a mock interview with the nominees of Best Animated Film and the character from Fantastic Mr. Fox said: "I thought we were nominated with regular films."

Ben Stiller brought a comical moment as he presented the award for Achievement in Make-up, dressed in full Avatar garb including the blue skin and yellow eyes and he said: "The Ironic thing is Avatar is not nominated."

Members of the Breakfast Club also know as the Brat Pack of the 80's made an appearance with Macaulay Culkin and Matthew Broderick to pay tribute to John Hughes who passed in 2009.

A dance sequence to the music from the movies was rather interesting featuring pop and locking styles of dance that isn't necessarily connected with the Oscars. Some parts were good such as the choreography for The Hurt Locker and Up, but there has been better choreography on the show America's Best Dance Crew.

Big awards for the night went to:

Monique won for her supporting role in the movie Precious, she thanked Hattie Mcdaniel who was the first African American woman to win in a supporting role for the movie Gone With the Wind.

Also Christoph Waltz won for his supporting role in Inglorious Basterds.

Jeff Bridges won for leading actor for his role in Crazy Heart and Sandra Bullock won for leading actress in her role for The Blind Side.

The Disney movie Up won for Best Animated Feature Film of the year and The Hurt Locker won for Best Motion Picture of the year.

The award winner for directing made history when Kathryn Bigelow won for the film The Hurt Locker, being the first woman to win for director, beating out James Cameron her ex husband for Avatar.

The Hurt Locker was the big winner of the night winning six awards out of nine nominations, beating Avatar which had the same amount of nominations, but only won three.

One bad thing about the Academy Awards this year was the clips during the presenting seemed to be so long, especially during the award from Best Original Song, it seemed like they played half the song. Then they lost the clips altogether at one point. Even with the length and just a smidgen of boring-ness the Academy Awards didn't disappoint and Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin were great together.
