Kung Fu Panda continues to play strong, bolstered by families taking in the animated comedy. It remained in second place with $21.7 in ticket sales. The LoveGuru opened weakly, with $14 million in earnings and a fourth place finish. That's not a good sign for the Mike Myers comedy, which may have suffered from poor reviews. The Happening slipped to fifth place from last week's #3 opening, and has earned over $50 million overall.
Iron Man became the first movie to cross the $300 million mark, after eight weeks of release. Strong word of mouth continues to propel the comic book film, and should fast-track the already announced sequel. Indiana Jones should be the second film to $300 million, and that may happen this coming weekend.
The Strangers finished tenth with almost $2 million in ticket sales. With an overall gross of $50 million, it is a modest hit compared to other films, but with a production cost of only $10 million, executives at Rogue Pictures should be ecstatic. Narnia finished close behind Strangers, with $1.7 million for the weekend. It will be difficult for the film to reach the $150 million mark.
The top earning movies for the weekend of June 2 - 22 are as follows:
1. Get Smart, $39,155,000 weekend gross, $39,155,000 total gross.
There is no stopping Steve Carell.
2. Kung Fu Panda, $21,700,000 weekend gross, $155,596,000 total gross.
With no other family movie out there, Panda rolls up the bucks.
3. The Incredible Hulk, $21,557,000 weekend gross, $96,476,000 total gross
It still remains to see if Hulk has legs.
4. The Love Guru, $14,000,000 weekend gross, $14,000,000 total gross.
Love means never having to say 'Your movie stinks.'
5. The Happening, $10,000,000 weekend gross, $50,267,000 total gross.
I see a dead movie.
6. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, $8,414,000 weekend gross, $290,835,000 total gross.
It's not the years honey, it's the money.
7. You Don't Mess with the Zohan, $7,200,000 weekend gross, $84,055,000 total gross.
This Sandler comedy is fading fast.
8. Sex and the City, $6,465,000 weekend gross, $132,385,000 total gross.
Hanging around like a bad facelift.
9. Iron Man, $4,002,000 weekend gross, $304,788,000 total gross.
The summer's best movie so far.
10. The Strangers, $1,949,000 weekend gross, $49,586,000 total gross.
Thriller has played surprisingly well.
